So, somehow I completely avoided spoilers for this game and have not seen the movie and had zero expectations nor an opinion on this game before playing it.

That said, as a game, I'm pretty disappointed, especially based on community hype.
It is extremely basic and the gameplay is very minimal. I had a few spooks, but that was it. Just minor jumpscares. There are like 5 objects to interact with and 1 is optional and another for a very specific event. At the very beginning I had correctly guessed the ending that the character you play wouldn't escape but I didn't guess how.

I understand now that its a very lore heavy game, but at the same time I'm very tired of them. Not every game needs massive lore and this one is kinda bad in the sense that almost all the lore is in a PC that acts as a lore dump. As for the quality of the lore, I can't say, I didn't bother to read most of it. I know that this will not be a popular opinion and people will say I missed out but I'm sooo tired of "Deep lore".

I'm glad Mark made a movie and the Dev has had success, but as a game I can't recommend it. If you're going to buy it, buy it on a steep discount.

I wan't to give a Positive Review but I honestly can't

The idea is neat, a Rogue like Lovecraft RPG but the reality is that its just playing Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG by yourself. After about 3 runs you have seen most of the events and entirely stop reading the text and just click the events you know the answer to as the scenarios barely affect the core game.

The art is really good and the sound is alright but the store page suggests that there would be a ton of animated scenes and there just isn't. There is maybe two or three and none of the scenes from the main trailer are included in the game and neither is a story mode for them to fit into.

The writing is fine... i guess... but there doesn't seem to be any original stories and all the scenarios are references to other horror media or a general Japanese folklore.

The balance is pretty bad, not "hard" just either easy or obnoxious. The game runs on a D12 system where you compare your stat to the roll and if the roll is lower or equal to your your stat you succeed. The issue with that is the lowest stat on all but one character is 4 so mathematically any given character has at least 33% chance to succeed at their worst but all their other stats are 1-2 points higher resulting in even easier checks. To counter this, the Dev decided that a bunch of random events just damage you with no other effect.

The magic system while cool just isn't balanced. The idea is that the spells hurt you as a cost but you get a effect but the downsides to them are far to high for the minimal effects that they provide. There is maybe two good spells as the others just deal too much damage to the player to use or are super niche.

There is basically no progression system and after your fourth or fifth run there is no reason to finish a run. There is an achievement tracker and is how you unlock events, characters, and Items, and other modifiers but most of the achievements do not require finishing a run and some are heavily reliant on RNG with some being basically impossible to complete naturally or without looking it up.

Characters and Old Gods should also have a large impact but they don't. Characters usually start with an item that you can literally purchase within 30 seconds of starting a scenario and due to the dice system they all have largely the same stats. There are characters that start with more rare items or allies, but they are not so rare to change the run. It is weird that they are handled this way as there is an upgrade to optionally give characters a personal truly unique item (of questionable use) that I don't understand why it's not the default. Old Gods barely change anything and basically just punish you for doing anything but the main objective. Backgrounds actually can change runs depending on the background and is largely the only part I think was done well.

Scenarios have multiple implementation issues and are advertised that they change based on which ones you do in which order. There is literally three out of the twenty two that change based on other scenarios and only if the other scenario is one of those three. Every scenario has two or more endings with some endings locked behind "Timeline B" which also changes some events. Because of a lack of change between scenarios and a lack of an achievement or unlock there is no reason to go for any specific ending other than the easiest.

There are also a bunch of unfinished things in the game that just don't work or are placeholders for later content. Loads of items from scenarios, locked choices or impossible tasks for scenarios, most of the functions in your house. These should have been finished prior to release as this game was in early access for a long time.

Ideally the modding scene could fix most of this but the current modding scene kinda sucks too. Most current mods are joke mods to include random characters like McGruff the Crime Dog, an anime character like Lain, or some self insert OC.

Last but certainly not least. The Dev just disappears constantly. There was an update for March mentioned in February. It's now May with no update and no reply from the Dev.

Most of my issues are balance related and can be fixed and I would be happy to change my review if they do but with the Dev just vanishing constantly and a lot of toxic positivity regarding their practices and general state of the game I can't recommend this game in its current state.

September 2025 Update: There has been exactly one update since I wrote this in May of 2024 and it was not to the game. It was to announce Merch.

Zero accessibility settings. I physically cannot read any text in this game, its just too small on my monitor.

Really interesting, not sure i got the how's and why's of the story but the unique way of navigating is totally worth playing.

Got it originally for Warhammer 40k, and it does well at that, but its pretty good at many other games and has a huge community of mods.

Good. More Steins Gate

Though IMO not as good as the original. Had some big gaps in plot that i just couldn't suspend my disbelief for. New characters were great, but were mostly under used as well as most of the original cast.

game is fun and easy to play. BUT there is not a lot of content for 2 bucks and basically forces you to get the $30 DLC to really do much

Got this game on a recommendation. Its a stat management game with some date sim elements but those kinda get thrown out part way through. I didn't find any character particularly interesting and half of the routes felt incomplete. I had not played a stat manager before but this didn't impress me much.
