Early Access Review
I've spent probably too many hours to count in Skates 1 through 3 combined. It's been a long time since a new one came out, so I definitely got a heavy bias towards my review. Which is to say that at it's core, Skate is the first Skateboarding game since Skate 3 to really feel like Skate. Session didn't scratch that itch, Skater XL didn't scratch that itch...Not that either of them intended on doing that. Tony Hawk I also love but that's practically a different genre to what Skate is doing. There's nothing that does Skateboarding like Skate does, and while this time around it's got some rough edges, the core is still the same.

Poor writing, a formulaic set of missions set into the same 4 categories, competitive multiplayer that could use a lot of reworking. But all these gripes I have wash away when I hit a perfect line, come up with a creative DIY spot, or bust out huge airs. Besides, it's still early access. At the end of the day it'll get fleshed out. But for right now? While it's bones are still showing? I gotta admit... It's got some good bones.

At a time where it feels like most live service games drop like flies, I can see Skate being different if it's treated with the right care and love by it's developers and community. But maybe that's just wishful thinking from a guy who doesn't wanna wait another 15 years for a new Skate game. Either way, I'm gonna keep hoping for the best, and I'm gonna likely keep visiting San Vansterdam as it changes over time.
