Nothing like what I thought it would be.

This game is gorgeous - Astera, the little hub village, is just incredibly detailed. I love the look of everything in this game, but it's a damn shame that the actual GAME play is lackluster.

If you like RPG's, damage scaling through upgrades, upgrade-based progression, and just overall anime type nonsense like over-the-top flashy combos and ENOURMOUS weapons - You will like this game.

The tutorial is an immediate turn-off. NPC's treat you like you have the IQ of a dung beetle, and only gloss over the barest essentials. It's incredibly jarring and overwhelming to receive a play-by-play on how to open your map and check your surroundings, but receive NO helpful insight on any of the interactable plants. And there's just so much I feel like I'm missing.

I feel like I can't even write a solid review because, after 2 and a half hours, the game only ever trips on its own feet trying to explain "follow the monster, attack the monster, press [X] to attack the monster." like ok, so what the hell do any of these crafting materials do? How do I craft? I have a roasting spit in my inventory, do I need to eat food? What's that yellow blade under my health bar? Why does it go down when I attack?

There are an immense amount of fine details in the gameplay that are left to intuition. For someone who has never played a monster hunter title, I genuinely had no idea where to even begin playing this game. After going on a couple quests, the game-loop so far looks like this: "Track the monster, fight the monster, the monster is running away, track the monster, fight the monster, the monster is running away - wash rinse repeat."

The game is insanely easy. Imagine Dark-Souls telegraphed combat, except the punishment of getting hit is like 2% of your healthbar. I'm not sure if this game even has a difficulty curve, but so far it seems harder to actually fail a mission than to succeed... It's only a matter of time. And TIME is something this game likes to toy with. When you complete a mission, you get maybe 15 seconds to skin the monsters and grab your loot before the game ENDS the MISSION for you! Furthermore, if you are too far from the NPC, because you're exploring or whatever, they will only shout to you maybe 3 times before your character freezes, the screen fades to black, and you teleport to them anyway.

Another bit of gameplay that annoys me to no end is the damn Scout Flies - These little neon green fireflys will lead you to the target monster. In other words, there is no intuition required, no puzzle, no MONSTER HUNTING involved. You walk around, find a neon-green footprint, press X on it, then the Scout Flies just drag a neon-green line all the way to the actual GPS co-ordinates of whatever you're hunting. That's it.

TL;DR - Boring, 1-dimensional game, overwhelming, unhelpful and infuriating tutorial. Oh, and the soundtrack is uninspired and lazy. It feels like background noise in an otherwise visually noisy game.

This game is a horror game like no other. You may be thinking "ohhh but it's 2d! it's an RPG! It can't be scary; there's nothing scary about that!"

So I ask this: Have you ever come across a difficult boss in a video game and felt that lead-in-your-gut, heart stopping, lung paralyzing fear of forgetting to save for HOURS of play time? This game is full of surprises, I mean REALLY throwing curveballs like it's trying to bring back a fad. Your saves are limited, making any resting point a god-sent miracle and ANY enemy encounter a "♥♥♥♥, I haven't saved in like 45 minutes, plz no" heart pounding fight for survival. The game design for this series is outstanding and like none other. 110% recommendation.

If you were recommended this game because you play Dead by Daylight, it's worth the play. I played the test build way back and it was then as it is now just a far better experience. Characters feel unique, teams on both sides have strategies to experiment with, unique environment interactions like jumping out of windows, and the real kicker: More than one objective. Gone are the days of holding M1 on generators for 5 minutes, pick one of the unique escape routes and pray you don't get caught in the process. Game's are tense and fun af.

Anyone who's played this long won't say it's a good game. Updates bring some hype, though. Memes are great, community is MOSTLY not toxic, gets repetitive and there's more than a handful of bugs.

10/10 solid game. Would waste another thousand hours again.

This game is good for a free to play game, but it needs a punishment system for voting out an innocent as an innocent. WAY TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE TRIGGER-HAPPY

Holy hell was this game a curveball. It is NOT the cutesy Anime Dating game you expect it to be, infact it very much deserves the "Psychological Horror" tag it is so beautifully endowed with. This game is a true gem through and through and I'm absolutely in love with the concept. And furthermore, now that I know how this game reacts with it's game folders... I might just re-install it to mess around a bit ^-^

I recommend Doki Doki Literature Club to EVERYONE (Aside from 10> and the feint of heart) because much like a good book, this game has you hooked even past the end. This review will end up getting lost in the sea of other reviews, and my one opinion doesn't mean much... But this game impacted me in such a way I had to write a review.
