(Also, you can move your mouse quite a long way to get higher speed, whereas a thumb joystick has a very small distance you can move it, making fine control even harder) Um, so yeah, not trying to start a flame war. I'm not saying gamepads suck, I have one that's great for the games that they're designed. What I am saying is that I think they have a technical inferiority for mouse aiming, and attempting to explain why.

I think the best way to easily show the difference is this - Scroll up and down this page by grabbing the scroll bar handle on the right. Left click and drag it up and down. See how fast you can scroll to the top and bottom. See how slowly and finely you can control it. Your mouse movement has a direct correlation to what's happening on your screen. Now your mouse is kind of emulation a joystick. You can scroll up or down from the centre point by moving your mouse up or down, at a higher speed the further your mouse is from centre. It's not a bad way of moving about the screen, but you just don't get the same fine control that you do by moving the handle directly with your mouse.

A mouse gives direct correlation to the crosshair on the screen. You can move it as fast or as slow as you want. The only limit is when you run out of mousepad and have to lift your mouse to reset it, but that takes a fraction of a second for an experienced gamer. A joystick has a large limit in your maximum crosshair movement speed. it's also limited by being small and having not a lot of different between movement speeds, and having the deadzone. It's a different control concept - joystick is "move in this direction at this speed" Mouse is "the cursor position matches the mouse position".
