TL:DR 7/10 it’s just DoW and its expansions.

The game is pretty much exactly as I remembered when I was a kid. Balance issues and quirks all present. If you’re expecting any major updates you will be sorely disappointed. The AI is still pretty stupid at times but playing most of the campaigns so far has left me very fulfilled.

Performance wise the game runs great. Occasionally some really intense battles have caused frame dips but it never really bugged me personally, made things feel very “cinematic.” You don’t have to hexedit the game anymore for widescreen which is nice. Sometimes when you Alt+Tab the game thinks you’re holding the tab button so you’ll have to reset the camera. Also the audio still breaks in the intro cinematic despite them claiming to have patched it at the time of review..

The new visuals are fine, nothing stands out or clashes with the art style of the game, but there is a weird bug where if you set a spawn point on a barracks or building it breaks some graphical effects on trees but only when you’ve selected that building. Also, where the hell is the Dark Crusade intro cinematic? Am I stupid? I literally can’t find any way to trigger it in game which is a big L for nostalgia purposes.

Soulstorm still kind of sucks. The sisters of battle are fine but the dark eldar feel like a Warcraft race jammed into a game that was never intended to have that play style. As a result they are ludicrously hard to play against factions above normal difficulty.

~~If you expect any more content or patches to existing issues from the older releases, download one of the many mod packs for the game, I understand two of the largest mod packs are now compatible with this release.~~ (Since I posted this review they have been doing regular patches and even added an option to turn off flying units wooo!)

Holy love of God this AI cheats. It wall-hacks, pre-fires, has no aim punishment for running and shooting. Takes several shots with no armor, doesn't listen to commands, occasionally becomes immune to teargas. Game is fun because i'm playing with my friends and the premise is cool but be warned this game is pretty trashy solely because of these glue huffing AIs.

Great game, fun with friends, but absolutely horrid and nonsensical Equipment UI, please address this. Will leave this as a negative review until they fix it

Phenomenal game, I remember trying System Shock 2 back in the day and not really understanding it, I've always wanted to come back to the series. Glad to say that it was worth the wait for this and I hope they do the same for 2 in the coming years.
