So, okay. It's hard to talk about this game without any spoilers. I'll have to mention some things that happen late in the storyline, but I'll try to keep the description as vague as I can.

First of all, a little background: I'd heard of this game a few times in the last couple of years, and it never really interested me. I tried reading/watching a few LP's and I just couldn't get into it, it seemed gimicky and too silly, and the stock images of birds really put me off. I saw it on sale recently, and decided to give it one more chance, thinking that maybe actually playing it might make me put more attention into actually reading and understanding what was happening.

and OH BOY

OH BOY

lemme tell ya somethin
lemme tell ya
I was wrong to dismiss it so easily

After I was murdered during my first playthrough because I hadn't romanced anybirdie (oops spoilers?) I was hooked

You have several birds that you can "romance" (nothing squicky happens DON'T WORRY GEEZ) and at first you think that's what the whole game is gonna be like, right? Just romancing bird after bird?

Nope.

Those romance paths serve as an introduction to those characters. The real story starts once you've finished most (all?) endings. A new route opens after that, and then things get much crazier, and yet much more coherent, way darker and more serious. You completely forget about the silliness of the premise, and everything about it that you would make fun of or that you would find too ridiciulous to take seriously is at some point adressed. Like the fact that humans and birds have different lifespans, that birds don't have the same dexterity, the cause of birds becoming so much more advanced, and every consequence that it has on the world and the relationship between species. The game is incredibly self-aware, and manages to play straight some very silly concepts with an unexpected, skilled and serious delivery. It's wonderful.

If the game was just about the romance paths, I don't think it would be enough for me to recommend. Though those stories DEFINITELY have their moments, a couple of them are sad, some are creepy or epic as all hell, but some are underwhelming, and most of them end a bit too abruptly. You only get a glimpse of who each character really is. The Hurtful Boyfriend route is where they really shine, and it's glorious, creepy, tense and twisted.

If you're going to play this game, definitely play it to the end.

And with all of that said...

I never thought I'd find a murderous partridge so alluring.
