Early Access Review
First off, I am a fan of this game. I like it for what it is going to surely be. I have actual legitimate faith in Stardock as a developer, which is more than can be said for 90% of devs out there.

This game is nowhere near finished at this point. If you want an idea of how development is going and what the game is going to really look like, you can pay for that now. But you won't be paying for a game. Keep that in mind. Think of it as a tech demo. It's a beta, people. It isn't complete, nor will it be for some time yet. They're working on it though, and I have faith in them giving me my money's worth when the final product is ready to play.

My original intention with buying this was to see the shipbuilder, but that is very clearly incomplete and missing a crucial feature from GalCiv2 which allowed you to manipulate the camera angle in 3D space in order to see different attachment points.
Oh right, those. The little red arrows.
Yeah don't try to use the shipbuilder unless you want to give yourself a brain aneurism.
The little red arrows have no textures, and no outlines. They are pure red, and you cannot rotate the camera, so you'll very quickly be seeing a red blobby mass that will be impossible to work with. Don't bother.

I can't entirely recommend that the reader buy this, because it's unfinished. I can however, tell you that if you like the 4X genre, you should click 'follow' on the store page and throw this on your wishlist while you're at it. You probably don't want this game now, but you will, eventually. I can promise you that.

Went into a free-for-all game with a friend and we ran around the middle of the arena punching people to death while screaming in chat "fist me like a real man, ♥♥♥♥♥♥"

If you're thinking about buying this game, you should know right away that this base price is not all you'll be paying. We expect DLC to flesh the game out more. It's akin to Civ V vanilla launch. There's stuff here, but the box is only half full. Pay more money, and Firaxis will fill the rest of box.

This game makes me wish Civ V had never existed. I prefer this to Civ V, much like I prefer SSB Melee to Brawl. They're in a lot of ways, the same game.
In a lot of ways, they are not the same game at all.

The tech web is a welcome upgrade, and I can clearly see there isn't a massive imbalance between technology and military production speeds. They seem to run alongside each other at a managable pace.

The way military units in this game have been streamlined is absolutely the best thing they could have put in this game. No more spending gold to upgrade your outdated military units. You just need to get x number of affinity points to have them upgrade for free. There's a huge level of customization in this game, and I adore that. This isn't the same boring ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ anymore, you can actually have radically different experiences from game to game.

Still, there are some quirks. The UI could be better. There could be more 'nations' to choose from. Landscapes could be more diverse. There's a lot that could have been here, but it just sadly isn't here. We wanted a finished game, not a game that will be finished a year from now. This game had intense potential but sadly didn't deliver in a lot of ways.

That being said, my expectations on game releases are always so painfully low that anything I get outside of an unplayable steaming pile of garbage is exciting to me. Unrelenting cynicism will save you. If you like civ, and you want some fresh new visuals for your overall experience, buy this game. It's a fun game, despite the drawbacks.

Is it worth the money? That all depends on how much you like Civ games. If you're not big into 4X strategy and sci-fi elements then don't waste your money.
If you know you're going to sink over 30 hours into this game, buy it. Simple as that.
