Early Access Review
Game is going in a poor direction, devs finally announce the beta with more PvE content and then rewrite the entire game progression in the same stroke of the brush.

If Bioshock and Assassin's Creed had a child, this would be the unholy product of their sweaty lust.

I really enjoyed the early versions of AOS, back when it was indie and a little unpolished. The characters had real weight and didn't feel like spacemen. I will admit, this game brings many new weapons to the table. However the entire character of the original is destroyed in favor of this tf2 voxel remake. The original was so much more enjoyable for me. A HUGE factor was the usefulness of planning and base building. It was so worthwhile digging a tunnel to the front lines and trenches to cover your movements. This new version COMPLETELY disregards building incentives. There is NO REASON to build when every class can destroy your base in 5 seconds. Even the quick build options are worthless. The old game had elements of stealth and trench warefare, digging into your surroundings and slowly chipping away at the enemy across the valley. The fog of war really conveyed tension and uncertainty when crossing an open area, especially alone. All in all, the old version was extremely groundbreaking with it's suprisingly deep metagame and it's simple mechanics. Although the "real" game has smoother edges, it's fast paced gameplay completely did away with any strategic thinking and building for a run and gun voxel shooter. I'm truly disapointed with the direction the developers took.

This is pretty slick, it seems complicated at first, till you get used to all of the build queue options and the map. You have to capture the space around planets by building bases and raising a fleet of ships to destroy the enemy ai. No pvp, but up to 8 player co-op I think. And the ai gets smarter the more people you have playing. But at it's heart, this is a game about making key choices, deciding whether or not to capture certain systems is a huge factor. the amount of units is stagggering and through the controled chaos, you can micro-manage every unit. Pretty solid RTS coming from someone who doesn't play them too much.
