Asuna Yuuki, formally known as Asuna in-game, is the Japanese equivalent of the German name Anne... and to be Frank I find this to be genius writing. Reki Kawahara (The writer of Sword Art Online) is famous for his subtle authoritarian and oppressive themes, hence the use of the name Asuna. The main antagonist of season one Kayaba Akihiko shows character traits that give a subtle nod to Marxism-Leninism, which as we know is a communist ideology, this ideology directly opposes nazism. Reki Kawahara planned for Asuna to be the main protagonist in SAO, this would have lead the plot to be a Russia vs Germany esque battle... Unfortunately due to the target audience of anime (virgin 13-35 year old men) the protagonist female lead would not have had mass appeal... Yet another time that capitalism has failed us.
