The Courage in Almost.
Even if you never went through with it, there’s still something important worth recognising in how far you got. People are often quick to judge themselves by the ending, by whether they crossed the finish line or backed away before taking the final step. But we rarely give ourselves credit for everything that happened before that moment, the quiet battle that took place inside us just to get there.

Because for many things, the hardest part isn’t the action itself. It’s reaching the point where the action even feels possible.

Just thinking about it seriously mattered. Letting yourself imagine it mattered. Getting close enough to stand at the edge, feeling your heart race, feeling doubt and fear pull at you while another part of you whispered: 'Maybe I can do this', that mattered too. You may have stepped back at the last second, but stepping back doesn’t erase the distance you already traveled.

If you had never considered it in the first place, you never would have reached that point at all. Whether it was asking someone out, speaking in front of people, taking a risk, opening up emotionally, chasing an opportunity, or doing anything that scared you, getting close still means something. More than most people realise.

Because fear doesn’t only appear when you’re weak. Fear often appears when something matters. And standing close enough to feel it means you already walked farther than the version of you who never tried.

People tend to believe confidence is something dramatic, a moment where fear disappears and certainty takes over. They imagine confident people as people who simply act without hesitation. But confidence rarely arrives like that. Most of the time, it’s much quieter. Much less noticeable.

Sometimes confidence looks like rehearsing words in your head a hundred times before speaking. Sometimes it looks like opening a message, typing it out, deleting it, rewriting it, then almost pressing send. Sometimes it looks like standing one step away from doing the thing that scares you and not being ready yet.

And that still counts.

Because confidence is not all-or-nothing. It isn’t a switch that suddenly turns on one day. It builds in small moments people overlook, in every attempt, every almost, every time you moved a little closer than you did before. Those moments aren’t failures. They’re evidence. Evidence that part of you is already changing. Evidence that part of you was ready, even if the rest of you needed a little more time to catch up.

So don’t dismiss your almosts. Don’t convince yourself they meant nothing simply because they didn’t become a complete success story. Growth rarely announces itself in obvious ways. Sometimes it hides inside hesitation. Sometimes progress is simply standing closer to the edge than you did before.

And maybe next time, when you find yourself there again, you’ll notice something different. The fear might still be there. Your heart might still race. You still might doubt yourself.

But maybe you’ll take one more step.

Because you’re always confident enough, you just have to prove it to yourself by going a little further next time.
