What is there to say about Europa Universalis IV? It is an ambitious grand strategy game that allows for a myriad of alternative history scenarios for the player to pursue. You can conquer the world as Ryukyu, reestablish the Tang Empire, reforge the Roman Empire, and thousands more formable nations. The gameplay is intuitive and once you understand how the mechanics work you can easily achieve what you set your goal as for any playthrough. The only downside of the game that prevents it from being perfect is the AI's behavior, where if you are at war with an AI country they will bypass your armies and provinces at the front and siege provinces deep in your country if you do not have the forts to stop them. It can be annoying that you're playing whack-a-mole with enemy armies, but otherwise that is my only complaint. EUIV has come a long way from its launch, and in its final state, I can whole-heartedly recommend this game as one of THE greatest grand strategy games of all time.

If you're looking for the realistic economics that the Democracy franchise lacks, this is the game for you. There is no one way to run your government like in the Democracy games and you are able to experiment in any way you like. That being said I wish there were some more depth with foreign and domestic policy. But nontheless, this is a much better game than Democracy and has the potential to surpass it in a few updates. 8/10

Early Access Review
The price hike is absolutely ridiculous for an unfinished game. Sure the developers are preparing for a final release of the game but that doesn't warrant a 40 dollar price hike.

What should happen is that they keep the 20 dollar asking price, fix all the major bugs and whatnot, then hike it up to full price after everything is fixed and the game is polished beyond belief.

Just get it on sale.

I got this on sale expecting an overhaul to diplomacy and some buff to the Barbary States. And yes, the Barbaries got an upgrade alright, one that ruins the game if you're a smaller Euro power on the Mediterranean.

They are now able to raid nearby coasts for ducats and sailors with a cooldown time of 2 years. This would be fine, but everytime they raid one of your coasts it acts as if it's been looted and it takes 2 YEARS for the loot meter to go back to its original state, and then they raid that province again. You're always in the negative for ducats and there's no way to expand if you're a small nation on the Mediterranean.

If you're going to play as a Mediterranean state, disable this dlc.
