this is a HESITANTLY positive review. 3/5 stars

as another reviewer said, video games don't have to be fun. most of my favorite games are not fun. but typically, games should not be actively unfun. i so wish i could rate this higher because the art direction is phenomenal. sci-fi is not my favorite genre but i thought the sets and the character designs were great. there is so much charm and originality in this game. the alien-tech abstract interfaces for various machines are particularly inspired!! the soundtrack was promising, but unfortunately all of the tracks loop far too quickly to not get incredibly annoying while youre exploring.

the platforming and movement made this game so much less enjoyable than it could be. i know comparing frustrating movement to ice levels is tired, but here its really true. i think the slippery movement is a deliberate choice that compliments the aesthetic of the game, and i dont hate it in most areas. but oh my god was it draining during platforming tasks. the end portion of the game (including the "combat" encounters) felt like a total slog because of it.

i do see myself coming back to fragrance point because id like to see the other ending(s?) and complete more of the challenges, but right now i have too much of a headache from finishing it the first time.

moon is a meditative experience. much of the game is spent waiting. it is purposefully slow at even its most exciting moments. this makes sense for a game about love and connection triumphing over violence and action. full disclosure: i used a guide for almost the entirety of the game. the puzzles are OBTUSE which is to be expected from games of this era but still... i want to say i wouldve enjoyed it more had i figured everything out on my own but i doubt thats true because i wouldve just given up. even with a guide, though, the story was well worth experiencing and gave me a lot to think about. yes i teared up a little at the ending. its easy to see the inspiration undertale drew from moon, but they tackle similar subject matter in totally different ways.

this game is lovely. the characters are so full of life, aided by the wonderful art and claymation. i love the sound direction of this game as well... great music and the way the character voices are done is so charming. i thought the use of a diegetic stereo was clever, but a little bit frustrating to use as tracks pause during screen transitions and in some areas it is completely inaccessible (particularly frustrating in mushroom forest because u spend so much time wandering in that area and the track played there is repetitive and annoying.....).

i also loved the variety in the mini-game portions of the game that come with completing certain love events. there is a great amount of variety to the game which is important with how slow most of it is. ♥♥♥♥ that annoying proto-flappy bird game with the terrible sound effects though.

(major ending spoiler) the fourth wall break at the end encourages players of moon to more directly think about how they should reflect on their time spent playing... i first got the "bad ending" which left me so disappointed as i thought the problem was that i hadnt 100%ed the love yet. so i collected the last of it and retried only to realize the true meaning of "opening the door" and finding love beyond measure... i loved it.

overall, this game is great. you can tell how much love and passion was put into it. a wonderful instance of video games as art. it is only held back by some frustrating moments and logic that would completely inhibit many from completing it without a guide.
