If you like the the OG Dead Island and managed to get good fun out of Riptide, then it's worth buying on sale. The game has many problems and annoyances, but the performance and core Dead Island experience aren't among them.

What do you want out of a Dead Island game?

If you want the classic zombie-slapping experience with a variety of more or less distinct weapons?
It's certainly there.

Do you like the redneck engineering and character skills bordering on magic?
For better or worse, it's been tuned to 11.

Do you want characters with the sheer aura of Sam B.?
Wrong game. The characters are obnoxious across the board and rarely shut up.

Good game, especially if you are cultured.

The difficulty is very low for a roguelite, even I beat the game in 4.4 hours in the most basic way - if you're gonna leave it at that, then you might feel ripped off, as the game doesn't have very much content at all. But what it has feels overall polished and the gameplay is certainly clean and rather simple.

The stylistic choices overall are excellent and the dev's artistic prowess carries half the experience by delivering beautiful nuns and visually awesome stages. The UI is a bit rough around the edges, but that's the worst of it.

As for technical issues, the game suffers from micro stutters after a while, which grow in frequency and intensity as a run carries on, of little significance during the first, but I recommend restarting the game between runs - if you don't, then it's gonna get rather disruptive by the time your second run reaches the last stages.

Nonetheless, I believe this is a great entry into the roguelite genre, something easy to smooth oneself into the way they are generally played. I bet half our grannies could beat it.

Very good game with many little flaws. Act 1 is peak, and it's mildly downhill from there on.
If you play very slowly and thoroughly, the campaign can take ~200 hours to complete

The AI is so incredibly dysfunctional that, short of a few early game attacks, it never amounts to anything beyond that.
The Population cap is so low and you get nickled and dimed on it by so many sources outside of units (upgrades for units, eco and buildings from your deck), that this feature seriously undermines itself. There are plenty of mods to improve the AI and increase the unit cap, but the AI still fails to make any real use of it. The AI is so bad, that it simply cannot play water maps - the villagers harvest the starting island and then they just idle, maybe build a few buildings on it to produce a useless army that cannot go anywhere, because the AI seems incapable of using transport ships at all. There are also strict build limits on all sorts of units and buildings to the point that few unique and lopsided strategies are possible. There is an oppressively large zone around enemy buildings and town centers that prevent any construction. Walls and towers also cannot be repaired by villagers, they have to be selected indivually and a button has to be clicked - you cannot select 2 or more walls or turrets or any other building at all, and repair them all at once - there are so many little details that are just annoyingly off.
It's a shame that this game, which gave me so many hours of fun as a kid, just doesn't hold up anymore. The game is shockingly unpolished and I do not think the developers ever tried to play it.

I heard they polished the hell out of this game, so I returned and am impressed. The gameplay loop has largely remained as it was, but everything around it has become way cleaner and more fun.
