I was born in Hampton, Virginia, to my single mother, Ann Iverson, who was just 15 years old when she had me. My father, Allen Broughton, was not involved in raising me.

During my early childhood in Hampton, people called me “Bubba Chuck.” A childhood friend, Jaime Rogers, once said that I always looked out for the younger kids and that I could teach anybody. When I was 13, the man I saw as a father figure, Michael Freeman, was arrested in front of me for dealing drugs. After that, I struggled in school, failed eighth grade because of too many absences, and eventually moved away to get out of the projects.
