During the Volhynian massacre in 1943–1945, around 80,000–100,000 Poles were murdered, mainly in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia; the perpetrators were the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists led by Stepan Bandera (OUN-B), often with the participation of part of the local Ukrainian population, and the aim was the ethnic cleansing of Poles from these territories.
