This is a long ass post, skip to the very bottom for tl;dr if you don't want to read all of it.
At the time of writing this post, I've gave Paladins many chances to improve after a new patch releases. I've been playing Paladins since the CB20s (when there was a siege engine that destroyed gates and you had teleporters to get back into battle more quickly). I must say, with all honesty and without a doubt, I loved Paladins all the way until CB30. The game was leaning towards MOBA, a lot of different ways to approach each match due to the large maps and slower TTK. You could hide and wait for the right time to flank, take potshots in the backline and slowly move up to the front, or just storm onto the point and take objective control. And then there were burn cards. Should anything sudden that changes the tide of the battle, there was always a way to avoid it or counter it quickly by buying the right burn cards and/or eliminating the enemy. You had horses to travel around the map more quickly, making it easy to reposition yourself to escape or flank the enemy. Hell, if someone was chasing you and they had bad aim, you could take equestrian and get out of combat healing then turn back and kill them. Paladins was fun af and I wouldn't play another game as long as long as the servers are up.
As for as bugs and exploits goes, there weren't any that particularly stood out to me when I recall the old patches. If there were any bugs, game-breaking ones were fixed quickly in hotfixes and smaller bugs usually took a patch or two to fix. It's not too shabby, considering that about everything was in a playable and enjoyable state...
Then, everything changed when CB30 attacked (dun dun DUNN)~~~
============== The New TTK and Balance ==============
TTK was lowered significantly, making it more FPS oriented, some champions underperformed against normal matchups, and some champions outperformed, and then there were champions that were broken and full of bugs; they didn't fit in the game. Playable? Yes. Enjoyable? Debatable. If you mained that broken champion, you no longer enjoy playing as that champion because you couldn't do the same things you did a patch ago. It was either abilities not working properly, normal attacks doesn't fit the new flow of battle, or the overall design just doesn't make sense in the new TTK introduced in CB30. Alright, play them another way you say. Well, why play them when you can play overpowered champions and have fun owning people who didn't play the same champions you do?
The new TTK isn't the worst thing in the world, I'll admit. It takes a lot of time for some people to adjust to it and enjoy it, while some takes literally a match to do the same. And of course, we can't leave out those who just never enjoys it no matter how many games they gave it. I fit under that category. I can wholeheartedly understand the appeal behind the new & fast TTK, and hell, I've gave it well over 70 matches by now. Each game I'd have the mentality of "yes, there is definitely something fun in this patch, and I'm sure I'll finally realize it after playing this game." However, I never did find that fun in said patch, nor the next one, nor the current one.
============== Champion Bugs ==============
For me, the game was too fast paced. There isn't enough reaction time for me to pull out a counterplay against my opponents, it was you see them, you either kill them in the next 5 seconds or you die in the next 5 seconds. Yes, this is preference, and honestly I'll be fine with it if everything else worked like a charm, which wasn't the case.
Lets take Bomb King as an example. He was introduced in CB27, he specializes and excels in AOE blast damage, as well as zoning. He's a mobile champion as long as his poppy bomb is up, and he has a high skillcap; you could either suck ass as Bomb King or you could be godlike as Bomb King, depending on how you played him. After CB30 rolled out, Bomb King was full of bugs and more or less restricted because of it. You had Jolt causing you not being able to use any abilities (known bug since his release, surprisingly), poppy bomb occasionally not knocking you backwards once detonated, poppy bomb not detonating at all, sticky bomb occasionally doing no damage once stacked, significantly smaller AOE range on his basic attack and higher damage falloff on those AOEs. He couldn't deal massive damage like before, it was either you hit or you miss, hoping that your bombs actually did damage for once as you box an enemy champion. Yes, you can still throw your grumpy bombs and zone enemies, but that's about all you can do other than taking wrecker and toss your bombs at enemy shields. He wasn't fun anymore at his current state. The only reason why you'd play BK at all is if the two above is all you want to do in the match you're about to play, or just simply appreciate his unique champion design. Due to other champions being the dominant picks because of their insanely high DPS, there is just better champions to play other than Bomb King as he's became a situational type champion. I'm sure there are many other champions of the realm being this way in this current patch, but I'll leave it at that for you guys to figure out yourselves through playing this game.
============== Crossregion ==============
Aside from the content of the game, I want to bring up crossregion matchmaking. At first I thought this was a pretty clever experiment (yes, the whole crossregion thing was introduced as an experiment), but it got old pretty quickly and started to be annoying when I get crossregioned. Skipping the whole yes the playerbase is small and removing it will cause longer queue times & yeah preference ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I want to point out that this is not an enjoyable experience for everyone. For me personally, I already have to deal with slow internet with high latency on my side, I was lucky if I didn't have to deal with 200 ping spikes in matches of my own region. But to put fuel on the flames, 140-200 ping is the new normal when I get crossregion matchmaked, and that's not factoring in the already poor connection I have. The match is no longer playable for me at this point, I can't move 50 units out of spawn without being setback for a whole second and then teleported 10 or so unit further than where I was. Even if my connection stabilizes, I have to deal with abilities going off after a delay of .5 second to 1 second. Imagine playing Bomb King in that situation. Actually, scratch that, imagine playing ANY FPS titles in that situation. It's unplayable and certainly not enjoyable. After those experiences, crossregion was nothing but a blob of negative gameplay experience for me. I wouldn't play the game for hours until I've convinced myself that I wouldn't be put into another region again, only to be put into another region the minute I requeue myself for a match. Fun.
============== Matchmaking ==============
Enough about crossregion, lets talk actual matchmaking now. Yes, also skipping the whole small playerbase ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that I've acknowledged for a long ass time. I don't know if there is an actual MMR system put in for matchmaking, but there doesn't seem to be any. I've had plenty of games where I either have completely fresh players on my team or on the enemy team when I'm soloqueuing. If I was at a low level (level 15 for example), it'd be understandable and I'd give them advices on playing the game. But nooooooooo, as of now I'm level 97 in-game, able to play at least 1 champion from each different roles and fulfill their purpose. I'm still magically getting queue stacked with 4 new players on my team while the other team is stacked with players I've met & played before that knows how to play the game. But somehow the MMR averaged up from both sides are equivalent and thinks this is a great matchup for both teams. I don't know about you, but I lose interest in the game incredibly fast whenever I'm queued in a one-sided match. This wasn't that m
