The ~600 hours I have on record are a fraction of the time I've actually spent playing this game. In many ways it was a significant part of my childhood. It inspired me to learn everything I could about math, physics, and electronics, which 15 years later has transformed into an extremely successful career in quantitative finance, machine learning research, and quantum computing. I don't think I've ever experienced something else that captures the same level of whimsy and wonder.

This is definitely the nostalgia speaking, but I also think any game capable of creating such a strong reaction in someone (even an overstimulated teenager) deserves at least a bit of attention. Maybe we all have things like this: games that came along with the right mix of content and expression at the right time in our lives, that helped us figure out who we are and what we want to become. Either way, Gmod is and probably always will be what I think of when someone brings up games and creativity. Building a replica of middle earth out of cubes is cool, but shooting down your friend's flying dumpster with your own amalgam of props, turrets, and thrusters will make you feel *alive*
