My first experience with Destiny 2 was back when it was available for free on the Blizzard platform. I played it a little bit but quickly lost interest. Then, I picked it up again when it launched on Steam. I went through the base campaign, the first two expansions, and even played the Leviathan raid. It was a great experience.

After that, I bought Forsaken and Shadowkeep, and those were also fantastic. Then came Beyond Light and The Witch Queen, both of which were solid expansions with good content.

But when Lightfall dropped, I really started to question the game loop. The story felt poorly written and rushed (which was legit the only thing why I played the game and was hyped about because I was really invested in the story/lore). With the release of The Final Shape, I asked myself: Why am I still playing this game? Why am I constantly checking websites, tracking events, and trying to stay up to date.

It took me long to realize, but the only reason I kept playing Destiny 2 in the end was pure FOMO. So much of the game is locked behind time gated seasons. If you don’t buy and play the seasonal content when it’s released, you miss out everything and good luck trying to understand the major expansion storylines without that background. I constantly found myself rewatching lore summaries and recaps before every expansion, just to make sense of it all, because I didn't buy the season passes. The events where also the same every year, just with a different look or story behind it oh and also it is locked behind a paywall.

But here’s my biggest problem: the "F2P" part is incredibly misleading. Even the original main campaign is not even in the game anymore, its gone, permanently, because Bungie, apparently, didn’t even keep the files. Seriously, wow.

If I want to introduce a friend to Destiny 2, they first need to buy and play through all the major expansions. Then, they have to grind their ass out to play a raid. Then the "F2P" part of the game is only limited to Strikes, Crucible, and Gambit, none of which receive major updates anymore.

The current state of the game for me feels like franchising than putting an end to the story, just to milk more and more out of the game. I'm really happy to scroll my social feeds without needing to log in to the game just to get that weapon or armor.
