I can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet.

It's much better, than the first one. Gameplay is nice. Story is amazing. I'd go on an in-depth analysis, but you just need to play this for yourself.

I cannot recommend this enough.

That's two hours of my life I'm not getting back.

The whole game is just one big piece of exposition. Not only that, it's also boring.
It's like a visual novel, where you are just along for the ride and nothing you do matters + walking simulator.

There is also a lot of hard-handed ideology mixed into it, but that's a given from a Vancouver based studio.

If I didn't get this game for free, I wouldn't have bothered buying it. My advice, save yourself the money and time, and just watch a compilation of the cutscenes on YouTube or something.

PS
Personal pet peeve - the calendar uses the CE atheist neologism, which is culturally insensitive to the makers of the calendar. In the words of Neil deGrasse Tyson, BC and AD should be celebrated because it was Pope Gregory's discovery that the Roman leap year system doesn't work. The hard work that went into it should be respected, not sweeped under the rug because an atheist is offended by what he himself considers fairytales, like some child.

This game tries to grasp the same popularity of the previous games, but the way I see it fails in the following way:
- wrecked the tactical aspect of the battles
- wrecked any immersion by forcing it on the player to churn out ships like there is no tomorrow
- aesthetically the designs of the Higaaran vessels came out of left-wield, taking more inspiration from the antagonists of the previous games than the Higaarans themselves.

!!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Storywise it also seems like it was made by someone who wasn't that familiar with the lore. The collectivist mentality of the protagonist faction seemed to be abandoned. There was an early focus on the individuality of the navigator. The navigator herself seems immature and for some reason act like the project that SHE spearheaded was ok as long as someone else made the sacrifice of being tied to a ship. I guess it wasn't that important.

Another thing I don't feel works is using the already abused in media trope of having the antagonist equalised with the protagonists. The race of navigators bit also seems like a spit in the face towards the Bentusi, who were literally one with the ship and to pretend they didn't exist seems low.

The cutscenes themselves seem closer to what you would see in StarCraft 2, than in any Homeworld game, but that's just something I noticed.

In conclusion, the gameplay seemed more like Supreme Commander in space, than Homeworld. The interface also went too minimalistic, the designs too simplistic and without any character to speak of. The tactical aspect was almost non-existent. The story was pointlessly dragged into westernization and individualism, instead of what was previously a well-constructed cultural environment.

The game is good. Story is nice. Graphics are a bit demanding, but the bugs sometimes make a whole save worthless.

EDIT: The game got optimized and a lot of the bugs have been done away with. Due to that, I'll give it a pass.

Two words - unlimited variety. The various classes, origins, and choices make for an unforgetable experience.

EDIT: I had to recommend this again. If you're into DnD, this game is for you. It plays amazing and the visual effects are stunning. Did I manage the beautiful soundtracks? You're missing out if you like turn-based RPGs and are not playing this game.

Feels like a different game every update. Different approach, mechanics and other stuff. Technically you can roll back and play with the bugs from that time. Some might enjoy this kind of change, but for me it's just tedious considering how long a playthrough on one civ can take, let alone when you organize one with friends.

Update: Recent updates have made my review age like fine wine. Mechanics with a plethora of new bugs. People having to learn the game anew. What's more it'll get even more complex with the new (possibly broken) psionic release.

The game presents a nice story.

Although it feels like the Harry Potter version of Fallen Order.

With all that in mind, the map is huge with a lot of content to discover and after the large patch, the game runs flawlessly.
The graphics are gorgeous too.

Almost all characters bring something interesting to the table.

All in all, if you're a Harry Potter fan and like RPGs, this is a must've.

Early Access Review
While the story is lackluster, the main point of the game, as it was with the previous games, is the free roam with countless possibilities. Plenty of mods to make the experienced more personalized. All in all, the game delivered a good and lengthy play experience.

I'm sorry to say, but this game took everything that was great about Homeworld. The RTS experiences of a spherical field, the moddability, both non-existent in the game. The unit production is completely counter-intuitive to previous games. Only two basic clans are available and anything else is hidden under DLCs. If you are a true Homeworld fan, this not a game for you.

Gra różni się od oryginału, ale jest to świeże i przyjemne doświadczenie. Mam nadzieję, że skończą pełną wersję.
