The Praetors of Vulkan are a little-known surviving 21st century Cursed Founding chapter created from the re-engineered Adeptus Astartes gene-seed and sponsored by the Salamanders Space Marine Chapter. While most Cursed Founding gene-seed manipulation ended in failure, the neophytes recruited from the Salamander's homeworld of Nocturne who were implanted with the modified gene-seed flourished. Although the recruits take on the characteristic dark-skin and glowing eyes of the Salamanders, the effects of the modified gene-seed instead turns their skin into a dark grey reptilian-like hide that provides addition defense for the marines of the Praetors of Vulkan Chapter. While this mutation is frowned upon by the Inquisition, it is tolerated since no other side effects have been observed. However the chapter is kept under close scrutiny by the watchful eyes of Inquisitorial agents for any sign of corruption.

The Praetors of Vulkan claim no homeworld or fortress-monastery as most other Space Marine Chapters of the Imperium. Instead they are a mobile force, based aboard a fleet of Battle Barges and Strike Cruisers, ready to respond quickly to wherever the Imperium has a need. Although mostly self-sufficient, the fleet returns infrequently to Nocturne to resupply and replenish the Chapter's depleted ranks after major engagements with the foes of the Emperor.
