is the way to play this game done by system link via VPN or is there a method that activates the native online functionality?

You can still play online for lp2, mainly by downgrading the recent update to have GFWL added back for online play, me and a couple of friends and randoms in the discord been able to play just fine this way.

The only way to play it right now by legitimate means is to purchase it for consoles. The multiplayer there still works, but unlikely to have any players. The Xbox 360 version however is backwards-compatible with newer Xbox systems, supports Splitscreen and System Link, so it is possible to at least get a 4-player coop campaign going with just two sets of consoles and even locally if you're dedicated enough.

So whats going on with GFWL? Did the servers go down and it no longer even hosts? Specially since LP2 was removed for sale thats why im asking.

I remember playing this back when I was really young
I loved the very last mission, like alot. I played that last mission probably 40+ times

I can see his Lobby in the Quick Match menu but I can't join it.

I am trying to play the game with a friend but we always get communication error. We can't even test which one of us has the problem since there are no other players to try to connect to.

Yes, we play sometimes. Yesterday we were playing for almost 3 hours. Check events tab for more info about further multiplayer parties.
