If it's possible using LAN you could set up something like hamachi.

Right, I was referring specifically to Play By E-mail mode, where each person takes their turn and then sends the save file on to the next person.

It is possible to play a game through Steam. As for saves, if one person saves the game before everyone leaves, that person can then load up the game later and invite the previous players to the game. No email required. At least that is what I believe.

Also, does anybody have any ideas for a method (other than email) that could be used to distribute saves in Play By E-mail games? I don't want to share my personal email here, but that method would be an appealing way to do multiplayer for me, since I don't often have the blocks of time needed to do long multiplayer sessions.

As of early March, it was possible to play internet multiplayer games through Steam. In addition, I just popped into the Internet multiplayer lobby and saw around 15 games in there, so it seems to still be active.

I think the way it would work would be that you just start either a public game or a password-protected game (and share the password with the people you want to play with) in the general Internet lobby. After that, the other players can look through the list, see your game, and join in.

Hello everyone. It is possible to play Civ IV BTS with friends on LAN mode, but you have to be on the same internet network. I have not tried it through Steam, but have heard that it is possible, but only for 4 players per game. Would anyone like to try a game? I would like to get some regular 4 player games going.

Hello BTS fans. I have some friends that I used to play online through evolvehq, but now that website is abandoned. Is it actually possible to play Civ 4 BTS through Steam? Even more that 2 players?

So, the question I saw THOR post ... did they shutdown the Steam servers as well? Played on them just last week.
