Battlefield 3 will have 24 player team deathmatch

Battlefield 3′s team deathmatch mode will be a smaller, vehicle-less affair than the sprawling 64 player Conquest mode that we saw demoed spectacularly at Gamescom last week. DICE confirmed to the BF3 blog that team deathmatch mode will support 24 player, infantry only scraps. It may be less than Conquest mode, but it’s a step above Battlefield: Bad Company 2′s 16 player contests.

Tank fans, fear not. There will be plenty of opportunity to run over cars, enemy soldiers and small animals in single player, and more exciting opportunities to shoot down jets in tanks, divebomb tanks in jets and fly jets into other jets in Battlefield 3′s biggest multiplayer maps. We recently learned that we’ll have to use the Battlelog website to access multiplayer. Battlefield 3 is out on October 25in the US, October 27 in Australia and October 28 in Europe.

Source: http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/08/22/battlefield-3-will-have-24-player-team-deathmatch/

Pre-order Battlefield 3 on Origin, get a free game

* Note: Pre-order promotion for the free game is only valid through the month of August 2011. You must pre-order through EA's Origin.

EA is trying very hard to sell gamers on a service they don't seem to want, at least judging by comments online. The publisher has been offering sales on past games, early access to the Battlefield 3 beta for those who pre-order, and now we know that you'll be using EA's Origin service even if you buy the game at a physical retail location. The latest weapon is a simple one: if you pre-order Battlefield 3, you get a free game from a list of three.

A friend who had already pre-ordered the game was pleasantly surprised to receive the following e-mail, which he forwarded:

"As a special thank you for pre-ordering Battlefield 3 early at Origin, we're offering you a bonus PC digital download game. Please apply the code below at the shopping cart to redeem one PC Digital version of one of our recommended shooter titles: Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 2 or Medal of Honor. The price will be reduced to $0 after applying the code at your shopping cart. Hurry—this offer is only good for the month of August, and is exclusive to Origin customers only. See below for more details."

That's not a bad deal, and it's my professional recommendation that you pick up Mass Effect 2 if you haven't already played it (although Medal of Honor is severely underrated if you're into military shooters). On the other hand, EA is beginning to sound like a pitch man on late-night television, screaming "but wait, there's more!" in an effort get you to take out your credit card and buy their game... through their service.

Source: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/08/pre-order-battlefield-3-on-origin-get-a-free-game.ars

Only one Battlefield 3 soldier allowed per player?

Yesterday we reported that Origin would be required to play retail copies of Battlefield 3, and possible digital downloads as well. This wasn’t a big surprise and most gamers wouldn’t mind, but we’ve now got some news that might arouse some anger and disappointment among fans.

In the past Battlefield games, players would create an account for the Battlefield game (e.g. BF2 or Bad Company 2), and they subsequently could create several profiles or soldiers to play as. Now, according to DICE’s Daniel Matros, one’s Battlefield 3 soldier is tied to the Origin account. In the Battlefield 3 alpha, one’s soldier name was the same as the Origin profile, and there was no way of changing it or creating a new soldier. In order to change your in-game name, you had to change your Origin profile name. However, this was an alpha version, and it’s a possible that certain player features were turned off.

But Matros specifically commented on Twitter regarding the ability to chose a player name in Battlefield 3 by saying “your name is linked to your origin persona“. It suggests that there would be only one player per Origin account, which is quite disappointing, seeing how the feature was available in almost all other Battlefield games (we’re not certain whether it’s possible to create multiple Origin profiles without having to re-purchase games). Unlike consoles, PC players have had a choice of not only choosing their name, but creating a new soldier and starting from scratch, if they so desired. This also leads us to believe that Origin will be required regardless of where Battlefield 3 is purchased — retail or any of the digital distribution platforms.

We hope that this isn’t the final decision regarding player profiles and that DICE reconsiders keeping the feature that was present in many Battlefield games. And while we can understand why EA would tightly integrate Battlefield 3 into Origin, this is perhaps taking it a step too far.

Source: http://bf3blog.com/2011/08/only-one-battlefield-3-soldier-allowed-per-player/

Even Retail Copies of Battlefield 3 Require Origin

You'll be making an Origin account to play Battlefield 3 whether you like it or not.

Battlefield 3 players will, as they found out during the recent alpha test, find servers and join games from the Battlelog website, meaning you'll need to use your browser in order to play Battlefield 3. On top of that, it's been confirmed that no matter where you buy it, BF3 requires you to have Origin in order to play.

The requirement only exists for PC gamers -- those playing on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will only need an EA account, which isn't much of a hurdle to jump through (and odds are, if you've played an EA game online before, you already have one anyway).

Those PC gamers won't be able to avoid the requirement, either. No matter where you plan on buying the PC game from -- Direct2Drive, GameStop, Best Buy -- you'll need an Origin account to play BF3 whether or not you opted for a physical copy of the game. That's according to DICE's global Battlefield community manager, Daniel Matros, who confirmed the news on Twitter earlier this week.

Origin is the relaunched version of the EA Store that EA has been trying to promote in recent months.

We've known for some time now that Battlefield 3 was missing from Steam and possibly wouldn't do sold through it, despite being the most popular digital games distributor around. EA says Valve is to blame, and BF3 only isn't available because of the restrictive terms of service put in place on Steam, pointing to the fact that BF3 is available through GamersGate, Direct2Drive, Impulse, and so on.

Meanwhile, EA has tried to push Origin as the best place to order from; doing so gets you early beta access and exclusive Battlefield Play4Free items in addition to the other pre-order goodies that are available elsewhere.

The Steam situation is unfortunate. Even if it were selling the game, though, an Origin account would still be required, much to the frustration of those who are perfectly content to rely on an existing service like Steam for all of their PC gaming needs.

It's not the first time a third-party service will be required no matter where the game was purchased; Games for Windows Live titles force users to sign in to a GfWL account in order to play no matter where they bought the game. The Origin account requirement is at least slightly less cumbersome than that, as the Live requirement meant that no one could be signed into Xbox Live with the same account (in other words, one person can't play a PC game while another watches Netflix on an Xbox 360 with that Gamertag).

It is worth noting that, once upon a time, Valve made Half-Life 2 buyers install Steam in order to play. The big difference is that it was a much different time and there wasn't already a fully accepted service (like Steam today) that Valve was ignoring by using Steam.

Regardless of the complaints that will arise as a result of this, Battlefield 3 is a big enough game that, like Diablo III and its always-online requirement, most people won't be dissuaded from purchasing it.

Source: BF3 Blog - http://bf3blog.com/2011/08/origin-required-to-play-battlefield-3/
