Depending on tastes (Read: Tolerance for older graphics), another option might be C-Evo (http://c-evo.org/index.html) . It's a variant of the early Civ games but the overall design philosophy isn't what you generally see in larger commercial releases. Only learned of the game today, though, so I'll be playing it for the first time tonight to see how well it plays.
And EU IV is taking up most of my days now oh god.
