Can a zombie outbreak happen in reality, or is it complete fiction?

I think it could happen, even though very remotely. It will be because of a virus, man-made or natural, that will affect their mental capacity. But the infected will not be dead. They will just lost thier humanity and become like rabid animals full of rage and its only reason for existence is to kill.

Currently, the only disease that could make a person really berserk is the rabies...Unless I am wrong. If this virus mutates and becomes airborne or more virulent, it could become a pandemic and we could see a lot of people like those scary zombies in the movie, running around and trying to kill other people.

The fact that an organism can function with their organelles not working at all makes me skeptical. But define your Zombie. Because if its a being that can get shot a crap load of times and survive because it doesn't use its organs then thats not going to happen. In order for things to move, they need energy and ect...

However mutants can be real though. Maybe just messed up radioactive people. Ummm.... I similar infection like 28 days later where their not exactly dead but run around all crazy can be real. Look at what Rabies do to humans. It deterioates the mind and makes the human attack everything at sight.

SO i suppose an "zombie" outbreak can happen
