The Husbands of River Song Review

On Christmas Day 5343 on the human colony of Mendorax Dellora, the Doctor is mistaken by a servant, Nardole, for a surgeon appointed by River Song to attend to her dying husband, King Hydroflax. River Song, who has not yet met the Doctor's present incarnation, fails to recognise him and increasingly frustrates him with her flirtations with Hydroflax. River takes the Doctor aside to discuss the operation he is supposed to be performing; the Halassi Androvar, the most valuable diamond in the universe, has become lodged in Hydroflax’s brain during a raid on the Halassi vaults and is slowly killing him. River wants 'the surgeon' to remove his entire head, considering it quicker and easier.

They are interrupted by Hydroflax who has listened to their conversation. He detaches his head from his mechanical body and orders it to kill them. While River defends herself the Doctor grabs Hydroflax's head and threatens to put him in the garbage disposal, creating a stalemate and allowing Ramone, River's actual husband, to teleport her, the Doctor and Hydroflax’s head outside of the ship. Believing Nardole to have information about River, Hydroflax’s body decapitates him to use his head as its own.

Although the Doctor is convinced that River knows who he is, she denies it. She reveals she purposely crashed Hydroflax’s ship in their location knowing the Doctor would be in the area with a TARDIS. Being unfamiliar with his new set of regenerations she has an incomplete set of his faces and Ramone has only been able to find the TARDIS, not its owner; River decides they will just have to borrow it instead. However the TARDIS's safeguards prevent it from taking off when it detects that Hydroflax’s head and body are respectively inside and outside the TARDIS.

Hearing Nardole calling for help, Ramone is tricked and uploaded into Hydroflax’s body as well. Hydroflax’s head allows his body to locate the TARDIS, and using Ramone forces its way inside. With Hydroflax’s head and body now both in the TARDIS it is able to travel to the starship Harmony and Redemption, where River requests that the Maître d’, Flemming, deadlock seal the baggage hold in order to prevent Hydroflax’s body from pursuing them further.

Rather than return the diamond to the Halassi, River reveals that she intends to sell the diamond to a buyer named Scratch, who has secretly filled the meeting point with members of his own species. After receiving payment, River and the Doctor discover that Scratch and his compatriots worship King Hydroflax and are after the diamond in his honour. Despite attempts to hide the bagged head containing the diamond, they are stopped from escaping by Flemming, who was tricked into entering the baggage area by an under-duress Ramone. Flemming has promised Hydroflax’s body an even greater head, the head of the Doctor, and believes that River Song will be the perfect bait to get it.

Sensing that Hydroflax's head is beyond recovery and will die imminently, Hydroflax's body destroys it, leaving only the diamond. River is asked for the whereabouts of the Doctor, but she explains that although she loves the Doctor they are mistaken in thinking that he loves her enough to find himself with her, as she believes the Doctor to be incapable of falling in love. Seeing the steady gaze and mild smirk on the Doctor's face, River realizes he's been with her all along and the Doctor confirms this by saying, "Hello, sweetie."

Being a time traveller, River is aware that the ship is about to be crippled by a meteor strike, which she uses as their escape plan, taking the diamond in the process. The Doctor uses Scratch’s universal bank transfer device to overload Hydroflax’s body, before heading to the ship’s bridge. While the ship is crashing, River realises that they are heading towards the planet Darillium - home to the Singing Towers mentioned by the future River as the place where she spent her final night with the Doctor ("Forest of the Dead"). Realising that they’re unable to save the ship, they flee back into the TARDIS, but the impact of the crash knocks River unconscious.

After avoiding taking River to Darillium for as long as possible to avoid their last date together mentioned by her future self, the Doctor decides to give in to the inevitable. After travelling to the next morning, the Doctor suggests to a man searching for survivors of the crash that he build a restaurant where they're standing, with a view of the Singing Towers, and gives him the diamond to fund its construction. Travelling forwards in time once again, the Doctor books the table on the balcony for Christmas Day in four years’ time. When River awakes she is told that the Doctor is waiting for her at their table. Hydroflax’s body, now peacefully controlled by the heads of Ramone and Nardole, was pulled from the wreckage and put to work as a waiter in the restaurant.

The Doctor gives River a present; the sonic screwdriver she will use in the library. As the pair admire the Singing Towers, River asks whether the stories that this will be their final night together are true, to which the Doctor only responds by saying, "Spoilers". The Doctor insists there is no way to avoid the end of their times together and refuses to tell River the future, but informs her that one night on Darillium lasts for twenty-four years, giving them a long last date. As the two smile at each other, the words "And they both lived happily ever after" are displayed on-screen. This was a very hilarious episode as River didn't notice that The Doctor was the Doctor. 9.8/10
Face the Raven, Heaven Sent Review!

FACE THE RAVEN

Rigsy contacts Clara through the TARDIS' phone, asking for her and the Doctor's help. They arrive at Rigsy's flat in London, finding he has settled down with a wife and newborn daughter. He has no idea of the origin of a tattoo on the back of his neck that is counting down towards zero, and lacks any memories of the previous day's events; his mobile phone is also cracked and data from the previous day wiped. The Doctor scans him with the TARDIS, discovering he had contact with aliens in the last day, and is due to die when the countdown reaches zero. Though the Doctor feels there's nothing he can do, Clara insists that he try. Assuming the presence of aliens hiding in London, the three look for a trap street where they might be hiding. They eventually come across it, aided by a flood of memories that Rigsy recalls once the TARDIS is able to restore the data on his mobile.

Within, they find themselves among several aliens, using a misdirection system to both hide the street from the average humans, and to make themselves appear human to each other. The aliens are led by Ashildr, who acts as mayor among the group. Ashildr, still going by the name Me ("The Woman Who Lived"), explains the aliens here are refugees, and that Rigsy had been sentenced to death for killing Anah, a two-face Janus female; he was injected with Retcon to forget what happened, and then given the time to say goodbye to his loved ones; the tattoo is a Chronolock that leads a Quantum Shade, appearing normally as a Raven, to its bearer anywhere they might flee to kill them when the mark reaches zero. The Doctor and Clara believe that Rigsy had been set up for murder, and Ashildr allows them to investigate the case, but tells them they have to convince those that live on the street of Rigsy's innocence to keep the tense truce between the various alien species that live there.

Clara learns that the Chronolock can only be removed either by the person that placed it, or transferred willingly to another. Believing she is protected by Ashildr's assurance of her personal safety, Clara takes Rigsy's Chronolock without anyone else's knowledge. The Doctor discovers that Rigsy had called for the Doctor when he was found in the street the previous day, and believes that Ashildr was trying to contact him and lead him here. They speak to Anahson, the daughter of Anah who is forced to dress as a male to hide her ability to see the past and future, and confirms that Me had to fabricate the mystery to bring the Doctor to her. They go back to where Anah's body is being kept for return to Janus, but find it is a stasis chamber instead, with a keyhole to deactivate it within a recess on a control panel. The Doctor comes to believe that the TARDIS key will unlock it, and proceeds to use the TARDIS key on the keyhole: the panel traps his arm temporarily to place a metal band on his arm and take his TARDIS key while Anah is released, alive and well. Ashildr arrives, and explains that the band is a teleportation device, a means to send the Doctor away to keep the peace on the street, and asks him for his confession dial before she activates it. When she goes to remove the Chronolock from Rigsy, Clara's transfer is discovered and Ashildr regretfully tells her that she had arranged the first Chronolock with the Quantum Shade, assuring it of a soul which only she could break with no intent of anyone dying. By accepting Rigsy's Chronolock, Clara broke the terms of that contract and there is nothing that could be done to save Clara.

The Doctor began to threaten Ashildr, demanding that she save Clara, but Clara begs him not to be angry. She spends her last moments with the Doctor, asking him if he is proud of her for her bravery before warning him that he will be alone and that she does not want him to avenge her, making him promise that no-one else will be harmed as a consequence of her actions. After tearfully bidding the Doctor farewell, she goes out to the street to face the raven alone, accepting of her decision as Danny Pink had done, and dies in front of the Doctor. The Doctor returns to the others, warning Ashildr that Clara's message was intended to protect her, and to keep out of his way. Ashildr then activates the teleportation band, sending the Doctor off to an unknown location.

In a post-credits scene, Rigsy is seen painting the exterior of the abandoned TARDIS as a flowery memorial to Clara. This of course was a very good episode. I will have to rate this 9.5/10

HEAVEN SENT
In Nevada, the Doctor enters a diner and encounters a waitress physically identical to Clara. He begins to tell her a "story" about Clara; neither appears to recognise the other. The episode then flashes back to Gallifrey, where the Doctor has escaped from his Confession Dial, setting off the Cloister Bells in the city that alert the Time Lord President, the High Council, and the Sisterhood of Karn. The President attempts to have the Doctor imprisoned, but others, including the Gallifreyan military, see him as a war hero, and instead they help to exile the President, who is revealed to be Rassilon, and the High Council. The Doctor learns that he had been trapped in the Confession Dial for over 4 billion years by Rassilon, to force him to reveal the identity of the Hybrid of the Gallifreyan prophecy that would conquer Gallifrey and stand in its ruins. The General and Ohila attempt to learn more about the Hybrid from the Doctor, but the Doctor asserts that they must ask Clara Oswald about it.

The Doctor has the Time Lords use an "extraction chamber" to retrieve Clara from her timeline just before the instant of her death, with her biological processes suspended in a time loop to stop her from dying, keeping her alive but leaving her without a pulse and unable to age. The General attempts to explain the situation to Clara, but the Doctor steals his sidearm and, after confirming that he can still regenerate, shoots him to cover his and Clara's escape. The Doctor takes a neuro block from the lab before the pair flee to the Cloisters containing the Matrix, the computer system that serves as a repository of the knowledge of dead Time Lords. While looking for the exit and avoiding the Cloister Wraiths that protect it, the Doctor tells Clara about one Time Lord who managed to escape the Cloisters, leaving him mad. Clara recognises this was the Doctor himself, having learned of the prophecy of the Hybrid from the wraiths that would lead him to leave Gallifrey in the stolen Type 40 TARDIS. The newly-regenerated female General and Ohila give chase and attempt to convince Clara to come with them. TO BE CONTINURED

He subsequently lands the TARDIS on Earth where they are captured by Vikings. The Doctor tries to frighten them by brandishing his sonic sunglasses, but an unimpressed Viking simply breaks them. The Doctor and Clara are taken to the Vikings' village, where the Doctor attempts to use his "magic" to impress the Vikings into letting them go. But, after he mocks Odin, they dismiss him as a false god. Suddenly, a image of Odin appears over the village, commending the Viking warriors' bravery and inviting them to Valhalla. A squad of armored suits suddenly appear and use weapons that appear to disintegrate the warriors. The Doctor realises they are using advanced imagery to target the threats; Clara tells Ashildr, a young woman from the village, to use part of the sonic sunglasses to free them, but the two are mistaken for warriors and are struck by the weapons. The armored suits disappear, leaving the Doctor alone with the non-warriors of the village.

Clara, Ashildr, and the other Vikings find themselves aboard a spacecraft. Machinery forces the group into a trap that drains the other Vikings of their adrenaline and testosterone and kills them, but Clara and Ashildr escape. They met "Odin" who is actually the leader of the Mire, a species that prides itself on its merciless reputation. Clara attempts to negotiate peace, but Ashildr, enraged by what she has seen, declares war for her people. "Odin" states he will launch an attack in 24 hours and returns Clara and Ashildr to the surface, to the relief of the Doctor. Clara recounts the events to the Doctor, and the Doctor encourages the remaining villagers to leave, then return once the Mire have left. They refuse, willing to stand to defend their village, despite the lack of any battle skills. Though the Doctor attempts to train them, they are far too weak and incompetent to stand up to the Mire, and the Doctor is resigned about finding another plan. During this, he comes to appreciate Ashildr when he learns she is a storyteller, using homemade articulated puppets to aid her tales. He also hears the blacksmith's baby, stating that baby is crying about the "fire in the water". The Doctor realises that this refers to the electric eels the village keeps, and he quickly formulates a plan with help of the villagers.

When "Odin" and the Mire attack, they initially see the village to be unarmed and having a party, making them reluctant to attack. This gives the villagers the opportunity to use the electricity generated by the eels to shock some of the Mire, while the helmets are pulled off others with a makeshift electromagnet. The Doctor quickly modifies one of the helmets and gives it to Ashildr to wear. She projects images from her stories that are relayed through the helmets to the other Mire, that of a giant dragon attacking the Mire. The other Mire escape, leaving "Odin" alone. The Doctor ends the transmission, showing it was just one of Ashildr's puppet creations at work, and that Clara has recorded the Mire running scared which he will use to ruin the Mire's reputation, unless the Mire leaves the planet in peace. "Odin" realises the Mire have been defeated, and the Mire ship departs.

As the village celebrates, the Doctor goes to congratulate Ashildr, but finds that she has died. Using the helmet caused her heart to fail. The Doctor becomes remorseful, upset that he could not save everyone. As Clara consoles him, the Doctor sees his reflection in a water barrel and is reminded of why he took his present face—one similar to Caecilius, who he had previously saved from the destruction of Pompeii. The memory reassures him that he can break his own rules to save those he cares for. He modifies one of the computer chips from a Mire helmet and implants it in Ashildr's body. The chip revives her by repairing her body. However, it will continue to do so, giving her perpetual life. The Doctor leaves her with a second chip to use when she understands why he has done this for her. As the Doctor and Clara depart, the Doctor explains that immortality isn't simply being unable to die, but watching everyone else they care about die. The episode concludes as Ashildr watches the world progress quickly around her, her face changing from elation and wonder to sorrow and misery, and finally hostility, as she continuously watches.
