No sooner had the Tower of London fallen to the control of King John's forces than London was stormed by thousands upon thousands of King John's troops troops. In control of the impregnable fortress, it seemed as though there was little that the enemy could do. From the tower longbowmen fired down on Edward's forces, and trebuchets fired flaming rocks at Edward's men. In the chaos of battle, King John gave orders for the Constable to be "accidentally" shot dead by a crossbow, for betraying his master, rendering him permanently untrustworthy. His death was specially designed to make it look like an accident or the work of enemy troops.

The fight for the city is now underway as the great assault is in full force. At the end of the day, one side will control all the city. A good amount of troops have been concentrated near the Tower, which is practically impregnable.

King John has sent yet another letter to the Constable of the Tower explaining that he must yield the Tower to him in order to end the effusion of blood caused by the war. He has slipped messengers into the city to parley with the Constable more and impress upon him his desire for peace and a quick resolution to the conflict. He has written that should the Constable surrender the Tower and save his men from disease and starvation, he will reward them all along with the Constable himself richly. He has also assured the Constable that his position will be maintained in his family and he will pass it on to his heirs.

King John II has written to the Constable of the Tower of London asking him to hand over the fortress to his forces, in order to prevent further effusion of blood, and promising him a rich reward if he should do so, including a Dukedom.
