Star Wars: Battlefront reboot due around summer 2015

Battlefield developer DICE's upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront reboot is due in summer 2015, EA revealed during a stockholders call today.

EA also noted that Battlefront will be the first of its slew of Star Wars titles to emerge. "We have partnered with Walt Disney and LucasFilm to develop a whole new generation of Star Wars games for the console as well as for mobile and handheld devices," said EA CFO Blake Jorgensen. "The first game that we're focused on is Battlefront. It's a traditional game that's done extremely well and this will most likely come out around the same time as the Star Wars movies start to come out, probably in the summer of '15.

Other announced Star Wars games are in development by Visceral (Dead Space, Dante's Inferno) and BioWare, who's already dabbled in Star Wars with Knights of the Old Republic and its MMO successor The Old Republic.

EA: SW Battlefront "well into development"

DICE is "well into development" on next-gen multiplayer shooter Star Wars: Battlefront, EA Games Label president Frank Gibeau has revealed.

Gibeau discussed DICE's progress on the title during EA's FY14 Q1 earnings call earlier this evening, following the game's announcement at E3 last month.

"We showed 22 seconds of where we're going with it and the fan response was very positive," commented Gibeau. "The DICE team is well into development on that product already, so we feel very bullish about our shooter rotation over the next several years."

Star Wars: Battlefront also "has a third-person component to it", Gibeau confirmed, suggesting the game will retain the previous games' option to switch between first and third-person perspectives.

EA on why DICE is a perfect fit

EA has commented on why DICE is a great fit for Star Wars: Battlefront. Speaking to IGN during an interview at E3, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau explained that the studio’s experience with Battlefield gives them a unique set of skills perfectly attuned to taking on Star Wars.

“Battlefront is a vehicle experience, it’s a character experience. DICE has proven, in how they develop Battlefield, as far as being able to do air, land, sea combat, all the way up to F-18s fighting,” Gibeau told IGN. “They’ve been able to demonstrate through the Frostbite tech and through their design capabilities and talent that they can create these huge, epic set-piece wars. That’s kind of the dream of Battlefront. Hoth, the battle of Hoth. You’ve got space, you’ve got the surface, you’ve got infantry, you’ve got AT-ATs. That’s the table stakes that they come in with. They know how to do that. They’re really good at it.”
