[Development Update]

Hello.

For those that aren't aware of the reasons behind the development deceleration: Unity, our current engine, is going through a networking solution transition. This just means that they're changing up how multiplayer works, and so we were waiting until everything was fully implemented and supported before moving forward with programming; everything was being built upon their old networking system, UNet, which is in the process of being deprecated.

We do not know when we can continue work on multiplayer. After consulting our patrons, we have decided to move forward with the intent to release Reign of Winter as a singelplayer game.

Currently, the plan is to release on steam as an early access title, polish the game, and add new content to keep the game fresh. After we are in a comfortable position and Unity's new networking solution is completed, we will divert our full focus to the introduction of multiplayer.

Expect to see more frequent updates.

Player

I’ve been doing some redesigning, as stated in previous updates. The player IK and ragdoll features haven’t been my only focus, but some others that, up to this point, have been designed in minimal fashion.

Food and drink can now be equipped, whereas previously this was only possible for weapons. Equipping these items at the moment is only for the visual; Further item functionality and use still has to be completed. The main concern was to provide a smooth item selection system, both visually and in the code. Something minor, yet important, I feel, is that the player actually unsheathes and sheathes his weapon before being able to do anything, whereas in games like RoK you press a button and magically your sword either appears or disappears. This will lead to more features that are planned such as weapons in your hotbar being visible on your character.

Item Skins

Like Rust, I will be implementing an ‘item skin’ system into the game. This will not be available at launch, but will be added after multiplayer and steam integration so that steam user inventories can be accessed (skins will be stored on your steam account, in your inventory). For craft-able items, you will be able to select a skin that you own on your account and then craft the item. Anyone in the game can still use that item, but only you or others with that skin can craft it. The skin system will extend to other cosmetic areas of the game, such as guild sigils and hairstyles.

With this update, patreon tiers will be getting updated to incorporate in-game cosmetics. Current patrons will get the rewards regardless of tier for being early supporters.

User Interface

Creating the user interface was significantly more difficult and time-consuming than I initially expected. After numerous attempts and iterations, it has finally been completed, at least to the extend it needs to be right now.

Included in this development, the crafting menu had to be completely reworked from an earlier version I had set up. Here is a preview of what it currently looks like: https://imgur.com/a/M9oW66J

Please keep in mind that it is an early version and shall almost certainly be changed in the future. I also appreciate constructive criticism or new ideas, so be sure to share your thoughts on the subject.

Player Redesign (Mechanics)

The current player animations and physics are awfully basic in their design. I am not adept in animation work, thus the current ones look somewhat 'stiff', as some have pointed out upon seeing them in-game in the movement preview video. A potential solution would be to simply 'get good' at animating and spend some time making better ones, but I have thought of a different route.

I have been looking into developing an inverse kinematics / ragdoll hybrid system. Inverse kinematics allow me to program realistic skeleton movement in the game engine rather than having to rely on creating specific animations in another software. Ragdolls would add a level of amusement and realism to numerous situations while blending well with the low poly art style.

Games with similar physics systems to what I have proposed are Sub Rosa and Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, just to name a few.

For the next few days, I will be working on implementing such a system for Reign of Winter.
