The taking of st.fallons hill, was almost a disaster for sir arthur the battle had not gone in his favour,it was not a battle of his choosing in fact napoleon had out smarted the british forces in his placement of axis troops, the valley had been hit by severe snowfall and using the storm as cover old boney had marched his troops up to hold the high ground too which sir arthur could only react with his small vanguard,as the main body of the army was 2 days away, the 3rd foot some men from the 2nd scouts one gun battery and the 5th light cavarly had walked into a carefully and tactically brillant ambush
Runereader74 20 Nov, 2016 @ 6:59pm
several times the RRA tried to push up hill to set up the lone gun as the rest of the strike force took cover behind the hills as murderous cannon fire rained death upon them two cannon crews were lost as napoleons horsemen charged across the valley to mount suprise attacks on sir arthurs men,the gallant major who commanded the small vanguard force was almost killed twice as french troops swarmed the lone gun forcing him to pull his men back as each day he lost 10-15 men,the scouts had tried to push along the left side of the valley only to be met with fierce musket fire from the french in the hills (several members were cited for medals) from which they again pulled back to safety, the 3rd foot had attempted to take the right side of the valley to much the same french musket fire,by this time sir arthur had lost 3 days as napoleon tied up the advanced guard
Runereader74 20 Nov, 2016 @ 6:58pm
the major decided to send out the 5th cavarly only to lose half their number as they fell prey to a carefully hidden battery and troops, the major seeing his men fall decided to send the entire advance guard down the right side of the valley, their orders were simple..."full attack"! it is unclear how the RRA managed to take the hill and secure the valley as their was only 7 survivors including the gallant major, but when sir arthur arrived with the rest of the army all he saw was an entire valley covered with the dead bodies of british and french troops and atop the hill of st.fallons sat on his horse the major sabre in one hand and bloody to his shoulder, and in the other a french eagle,as his remaning RRA troops stood watch over the burning french guns,it is said sir arthur actually cried as he witnessed the courage and valour of his troops as they cheered "god save the king" from the hill top,...chaplin Hakeswill st.fallons hill
Runereader74 6 Nov, 2016 @ 1:47pm
The war had progressed in the crimea as the csar's forces fought bitterly for every foot of ground they yeialded to the advancing british, the fighting had taken its toll on both armies and had now resorted to small skirmish patrols each one searching for the advantage,The 6th rifles from the RRA had been patrolling the hills and valleys of the steppes when they cleared the dense thickets to set up an overlook atop the small hill, unknown to them the russian rifle units had the same idea and had seen the 6th rifles come out from the bushes, making their way at an advance pace they would surley reach the top,the rifles had not seen them as the enemy had come from the dead ground on the other side of the hill
Runereader74 6 Nov, 2016 @ 1:47pm
the hill,it was to be a massacre, fortunatly the 5th light cavarly had been scouting duties for sir wellesley looking for groups of russian scouts and they had found some, they also saw the ambush waiting to happen, the 5lc spotter had raised the alarm informing the cavarly officer of the exposed rifles and the hord of russian advancing on to their position without hesitation the order was given and the 5lc broke into a gallop sabres held forward as they charged the enemy troops, the 6th rilfes had become aware of the horsemen riding towards them and at first thought it was enemy cav so they formed a skirmish line to meet the charging cavarly, one of their number recognised the 5lc as their horse shook the ground as they passed the rifles shouted "swift and bold lads, swift and bold" (this was the first time the rifles had used this phrase which is now the official motto of the british armys rifle regiment)
Runereader74 6 Nov, 2016 @ 1:45pm
The 6th rifles now became aware of the russian threat as the cavarly officer screamed "ambush, front ambush! front",The horse hit the russian troops who had mistook the charging horsemen (they also thought it was their own horse) their suprise turned to panic and panic then turned to fear as the screaming horsemen of the 5lc their eyes narrow and cold promised death, the cheers from the 6th rifles spurring them on as they shredded the russian ranks, their gleaming sabres of steel now dripping red as the enemy fell and was crushed beneath the hooves, such was the fear in the enemys hearts the 2 russian survivors fled ....toward the 6th rifles who had topped the hill, the baker rifle is a terrible thing at range and even deadlier as close range. unkown valley, the steppes,crimea.....Chaplin Hakeswill. "and the lords terrible wrath took hold and he sent his horsemen from the pit to drive the foe before them".

,The french gunners we no push over they held for 3 hours continuing to load the guns letting out murderous barrage again and again, pointblank blasting cannister into the crowd of red, green and blue jackets that were locked in some of the most vicious hand to hand combat ever seen, several times the french guns sounded as one by one them fired into the fray, the british troops taking cove behind anything they could find, only to come out from those places and deal death to the french gunners, after 3 hours the position had been taken with only a handful of scouts and foot troops left alive, the once pristene snow covered hill, now resembled an abatiour with the blood of the fallen soaking into the ground 200 meters away from the captured guns, that even to this day the very rocks are still stained......Chaplin Hakeswill at the battle of Serbastons needle.
Runereader74 25 Sep, 2016 @ 2:54pm
All 4 french guns turned on them and with cannister and shot decimating the foots lines however the herioc leader of the line stood and as an example to his men he single handley charged the guns by this time french musket had joined the murderous assault on the british troops, several times he was shot but never did he stop until his bayonet plunged into the french officer in command of the guns splitting his chest as he stormed the guns, this one action allowed the rest of the 3rd foot and the 2nd scouts (who were still sharpshooting frenchmen as they witnessed the herioc charge) to join the charge
Runereader74 25 Sep, 2016 @ 2:53pm
As the remenants of the broken swedish lines made their wat back to friendly lines the 2nd scouts had manouvered into position to shoot at the french artillery that were now set up atop serbastons needle, only to be in-turn fired back at by canister from one of the 4 french guns many of the scouts died but still they held the ground and for 3 days they put shot onto the french troops,by this time the RRA batterys had cooled down and resumed fireing on the hill, under this constant barrage the 3rd foot had been slowly and quietly making their way through the valley below the guns and had made their way half way up the needle, (this is possibly one of the first times stealth had been used in the british army) however this tactic was never seen again during the peninsula wars,as fate would have it they were spotted by a french gunner,.
Runereader74 25 Sep, 2016 @ 2:52pm
Napoleon's army had swept up the hills like the fiends from hell and had routed the partisan forces the swedish foot had gallently defended their retreat,at the cost of 3 quarters of their company strenght,(napoleon himself was to send a courier to sir wellesley praising the prowess and fury of the men, saying "had i had those lads in french uniforms this war would have already been won"). 23 nov 1885. "oh lord bless these heroic men for they fought valiantly, and with courage and honour no matter their uniform".
Runereader74 25 Sep, 2016 @ 2:40pm
The battle for serbastons needle...RRA 2lt chaplin Hakeswill...It was a bloody day for the royal regiment of artillery, their guns were over heating with the amount of shot that had been fired at enemy positions even though it was winter, the men were battle weary and hunger had taken hold as the supply lines had been cut by the french assault teams napoleon had sent forth,to stop sir arthurs forward advance, they had even taken to eating the horse's of the 5lc cavarly who, without their steeds were now bogged down in vicious fighting to defend the now silent guns lest they fall into old boneys hands, the lines had taken heavy loses on both sides the allied swedish foot had taken the most casualties in the first push up hill to the no infamous "serbastons needle" an otherwise pitiful piece of ground that held no stratiegic value for either forces, and yet was one of the most bloodiest battles that had been waged on the peninsula.
