Ama zamanla ortaya çıkan deliller ölümünün intihar olup olmadığı konusunda kafa karıştırıdı.Örneğin Cobain'ın kanında yaklaşık 1,52 mg eroyin bulundu bu yaklaşık 3 tane iğneyi peş peşe vurmaya denkti ve bu imkansız olarak bilinir.Ayrıca kendini vurduğu zannedilen tüfeği vücuduna aldığı bu kadar fazla uyuşturucu ile kaldırıp,yüzüne doğrultarak tetiği çekmesi imkansızdır ve kendini vurduğu zannedilen tüfekte öldüğü gün elleri çıplak halde olmasına rağmen parmak izine rastlanmamaştır. Bu yüzden ölümünün cinayet mi yoksa intiharmı olduğu tam olarak kanıtlanmamıştır. İntihar olgusuna Cobain ailesinin geçmişinde çok sık rastlanılmaktadır. Burle Cobain adında bir akraba, kendini karnından vuruyor, bundan beş yıl sonra da Burle’in kardeşi Kenneth kafasına sıktığı tek kurşunla ölüyordu. Aslında bu tür ölüm Aberdeen'da oldukça yaygındı.

Olayın ardından Courtney Love, dikkatleri üzerinden atmak için ısrarla Kurt Cobain'in ailesindeki intiharlardan bahsetti ve bunun için "Cobain Laneti" yorumunu yaptı.

KNBC-TV'yle yaptığı bir röportajda elektrikçi, Cobain'in intihar mektubunun saksıdaki bir bitkiden gelen çamurla kirlenmiş olduğunu ve "sizi seviyorum, sizi seviyorum" sözcükleriyle sona erdiğini belirtiyordu.
