Regions with buildings unlock units, regions without building unlocks retainers or armor.
Regions are gained by winning a battle in matchmade or the battle list. Every time you increase a star you get a region as well if you´re puppet is on a regions to conquer.
The more regions, the beter the troops you can deploy. More stars on you´re avatar gives more retainers to use and more funds in matchmade.
Hope other people can teach you more but this the basics of the game´s avatar conquest... Have fun ;)

I need help with figuring out Shogun 2 total war. i am lost and not sure how multiplayer works and the avatar conquest.

no events?? It´s only the 4th tournement this year for Shogun 2. If those aren´t events what is??

No events or tournaments right now ... the current tournament going on is clan tournament in shogun 2 we in world 5 and our goal is to get to world 1 :) Events we do mini events to fight eachother and train eachother or mess around have fun :D Join group chat guys its lonely here<3
