Why does a bowling ball have three holes if we're not supposed to put our penis in any of them?

Seriously, I'm not a bowler. I don't know anything about bowling besides the basic rules, but my buddy has a small bowling alley in his basement. We were getting drunk and decided to play truth or dare, and he dared me to stick my penis in one of the finger inserts. Long story short, it got stuck, and my friend had to use the lube in my back pocket to get it out.
