Check out the forum. This preconfigured autoexec.cfg makes many improvements to L4D, particularly the coloration of character outlines and items.

L4D is not like other FPS games. It has a strong element of luck. Also, it absolutely requires teamwork. Even the best player can’t make it through a level alone. The game is designed to force you to rely on your team.


This situation can leave you helpless in a number of circumstances. If your health goes to 0, or if you get pounced/smoked, you can’t escape without the help of a teammate. Even when you get hit by a boomer, you rely on your team to protect you and see for you.


Since you need your team’s help, it follows that they need yours. As you play, notice how many seconds it takes you to: save a pounced teammate; notice a downed teammate; notice a teammate trapped behind the rest of the group by zombies.


It is obvious to watch each other. The point is that among all the strategies in L4D, watching teammates is the central strategy of L4D – the main thing we all need to constantly improve on. A team can be incessantly attacked by boomers, hunters, smokers, witches and tanks and not go down at all if they watch each other and play smart.


If sticking together (watching each other) is the first rule of L4D, the second rule is to move fast. This is obvious as well, but there are two ways to mess this up. The first is to move slowly (duh). A team that preoccupies itself with deciding who should grab items, and has to tell someone to grab something over and over is likely to die rather quickly. The faster you go, the less the enemy team gets to spawn. So, a team that “birdwalks” through a level, without direction, is likely to run into twice as many special infected as a “shortest path” team.


Another, less obvious, way to mess up the “move fast” rule is to move too fast. This seems counter-intuitive, but players who fail to perform the first rule (stick together) by moving faster than the slowest member of the team, put the slowest member in a position where they can’t possibly catch up because they’re surrounded by the zombies you didn’t kill, pounced/smoked/boomed without assistance, or even downed, which more than eliminates any advantage that moving fast may have given you.


Noobs frequently fail at both rules. So I’m not talking to noobs. They can suck all they want and we’ll usually pwn them and their pub friends without trying. I’m talking to those who want to perfect their play against organized teams. How can we improve on the first two rules of this L4D contract?


Some suggestions for improvement:


1) Know where all your teammates are at all times. – even when you’re boomed, you should be asking yourself which of the waving figures on the screen is your teammate and if that waving figure is pounced or smoked.


2) Do not do anything that your team doesn’t expect – especially if it requires running away from them.


3) Focus on getting items and getting out – you don’t need to pitch a tent to get 2 pipe bombs, Tier 2 weapons and a healthpack from the ticket booths in NM2. However, don’t run off without your team, as everyone needs to move together.


4) Don’t clog communications and speak clearly – There’s a reason people make fun of me for speaking in the third person (“Hunter on Squarely!”). Call for help in a consistent, clear and brief way; if you need to repeat the statement, do so quickly and clearly so that other teammates can communicate and coordinate your rescue without your constant yelling.


5) Communicate frequently, quickly and early - Any time you are going to throw a pipe-bomb/Molotov, call it early, so you don’t end up with 2-4 pipe-bombs out at once. Any time you see an item, call it out. Anytime you grab an item that you or someone else called, let the group know quickly.


6) Don’t micro-manage your group – rather, focus on following the group and setting up for basic strategies (3xhunter simultaneous pounce, witch sniping, and whatever else the team plans on doing). L4D isn’t about leading boldly, it’s about leading by following.
