I found this solution on a forum about Total War. Hamachi2 is a virtual network, you can get the non-commercial version for free on:
https://secure.logmein.com/UK/products/hamachi2/
You and the other players need to register a free account and download the free server. The host has to create a network with an unique name and a password, to give them to the other players in order to join the network, and you should be able to play empire together. I haven't tried that myself, need to use it with some of you.
