Mostly to steal market place items, get the account then start tricking the victims "friends" again with fake "you're getting banned" stuff.
Plenty threads about the stuff in steams general discussions every day, so obviously it works.
Even worse if you bite, then everyone in your friends list will probably be the target, so for your friends sake, don't click silly links :)

Fellow Survivors: a new scam running around Steam. You'll get a message, usually from someone on your Friends list, that will ask you for a vote for their team. The game type can differ, mine was CSGO w/team name ShonK. They'll have a link to go to for voting. I found several internet mentions of this scam but not a lot of clarity of what the scam actually is other than some accounts taken over. I've installed Steam's 2 factor authentication and changed my password but haven't detected any weirdo stuff myself. Plenty of guesses on the youtubes as to what the 'grift' really is - keylogger? or collecting accounts to broaden their list of Friends for more scamming. I'm wondering if they are looking for specific users that leave their payment methods 'saved', fat Steam wallets or other money related exploitable scenarios. Be safe :-)

We know that everyone can't donate..maybe too young/or no job/or bills/or other bad situations. It's just a little disheartening that there's almost 40 of us and I can cut off a finger on one hand to count members that chip in. I'm unemployed, and I've put time and money into getting and keeping this group up. Multiplay forces a min. 5 pound donation, but with PayPal, you can literally donate a penny... Every dollar counts, and this means a lot to not only me. If everyone gave one dollar, we'd be but just a few shy of another month. Again, donations aren't in anyway mandatory. Yet, this may be the last month of the DayZ server, then I'll just go back to paying on the TeamSpeak and stop the collections of donations. It's up to the group to decide.
