Washington DC, 1880: The Fall of the Republic

Across the capital, the stains of the Civil War can still be seen upon the white palisades and promenades of the city. At the outskirts, houses and churches like cracked and broken, and in the heart of the city, a terrible silence has descended after the Confederate victory, a reflection of attitudes across the entire country. By night, military officers whisper treason, and by day, the White House is looked upon with scorn and dismay by the myriad people of the American capital, many of them slaves who fled from the oppressive regime in the South.

After the war, confidence in the age-old Federal Republic of the United States was shattered, and no more was this change demonstrated than in the military itself, which took a swift and sharp turn towards Authoritarianism. The formerly Republican Ulysses .S. Grant, once a fervent supporter of the Union government, left the Republican party and publicly cut all ties with them alongside a large majority of the officers in the military. Over the last few years the Head of the Military has taken a starkly Authoritarian stance, suggesting that the democracy and Constitution of the United States has failed, and that if a firmer hand had taken the reigns of power, the Civil War would not have started in the first place. These ideas were combined in Grant's book "The Union Resplendant", a political condemnation of the current government, calling for the establishment of a Nationalistic, Revanchist and Totalitarian government in the US. His book swiftly became a best-seller across the nation, outselling even the Bible amongst the hatred and dissatisfaction that had built up since the Union's defeat at the hands of the Confederacy.

In the last election in 1879, the current President Robert .B. Hayes won only by a miniscule majority, and even then, only a fraction of the voting population came out to vote. On the day the votes were counted, Ulysses .S. Grant held a parade and protest in the capital, attracting a crowd of 200,000 to the city.

Though Robert .B. Hayes is far from a terrible President, the situation in Congress and the Senate has prevented any major reforms or initiatives by the President or the Republican Party. The last year has been defined by protest after protest and strike after strike, though these demonstrations of dissatisfaction have remained mostly peaceful, this state of bloodlessness was broken however at the so called "Easter Massacre." A group of 20,000 Americans, a good amount of them Black, marched on the White House on Easter in order to petition a new election, however the news had been distorted once it reached the White House, with the police claiming that the mob intended on violence. Soon after, a batallion of police assembled before the protesters, firing a barrage at what they thought to be rebels, killing 39 and wounding hundreds. The crowd fled from the police, and in the chaos, a further 207 protesters were crushed to death.

News spread like wildfire across the Union, and soon enough the Army of Pennsylvania commanded by Grant himself entered the city, arresting the President and suspending both Congress and the Senate. Having radicalised huge swathes of the population and the military, Grant was relatively unopposed in this move, and has declared a Provisional Government until the United States can forge a new path through this dark time.

With the fall of the President, acting President Ulysses .S. Grant has called for the armies of the Union to be ready for Confederate sorties across the border, lest they try to take advantage of the chaos.

Eager to impress his people, he has allocated significant funds to the subsidising industry and building fortifications across the Confederate border, in order to legitimize his current administration.
