The Giant Space Hamster
“Go for the eyes, Boo!” - Minsc of Baldur’s Gate

There really isn’t much need to describe what a giant hamster looks like: they are identical to the small, domesticated familiar to everyone... except they are significantly larger. They are a little over 9’ long, weigh several hundred pounds and are capable of storing upwards of 200 pounds of foodstuffs within their cheeks.

Gnome InGenuIty

The original giant hamsters were created by gnomes to power their inventions and other mechanical contraptions. A single hamster in an oversized treadmill-like wheel, which was in turn connected to a complex system of elastic bands that converted the hamster’s running power in to torque, could power even the largest of devices for several hours. Unfortunately for the gnomes, they did not take in to consideration the hamster’s ability to reproduce, and pretty soon they found themselves with more of these creatures than they could handle. It also made it significantly difficult to maintain such numbers in and around the closed environments of their factories and other equipment, so they are usually found wandering large hamster ranches run by the gnomes. On these ranches one normally finds huge burrows and underground tunnels that the hamsters dug themselves, and some of the more creative gnomes even went ahead to create large systems of pipes and over connecting tunnels through which the hamsters can exercise and move but be maintained within a closed, controlled environment. Eventually the gnomes made a realization that hamster meet, like cattle, is actually quite a delicacy. As a result, when a hamster is decommissioned and taken to one of these ranches to graze they may end up in the slaughterhouse.

DocIle and non-combatIve

The normal, run-of-the-mill hamster is not only extremely tame and docile, but they are actually easy to scare. If large groups of hamsters are agitated, it is not unlikely that the end result is a massive stampede of several dozen hamsters that will easily plow over anything in their path. When they have no choice but to enter combat, their primary attack is attempting to grab an unsuspecting enemy and stuff it within their mouths as if they were food. Each hamster can store two Medium-sized creatures in this manner, taking them out on the fight while it continues to claw at any other hostiles in the area. Given the opportunity the hamster will attempt to flee, taking any creatures they have swallowed along with them.
VarIatIons of space Hamsters
During their experiments, the gnomes attempted to create various different types of hamsters by infusing them with different materials and magical properties. What originally started as a scientific endeavor to create “the better hamster” ended up being a competition of sorts between different groups of scientists to see what is the most unique species of hamster. Some of these adjustments were as simple as changing their color, and as a result there exist hamsters ranging in appearance from the traditional light brown to something as extreme as bright red or purple. In some other instances the result ended up being an extreme form of mutation where the hamster became physically different: growing fangs, toughened hide, or even breathing fire.

MInIature GIant space Hamster

Even though some of these gnomish creations bordered on the bizarre, it was an undeniable fact that the basic giant hamsters were quite pleasing to the eye. Only problem was that they were too big. One group of gnomish entrepreneurs decided to capitalize on the opportunity and created miniature versions of these beasts. Using gnomish technology and powerful magic, they created a bread of miniature giant hamsters which can fit in the palm of your hand. These creatures were extremely obedient, would always cheer up anyone that set eyes on them, and in some rare cases could be useful to adventurers. Some well-known adventurers even interacted with these hamsters and posed questions to them, and although no one knows how the hamster’s presence helped to answer their questions and guide their way to success.

THe GIant space Hamster of Ill omen

There is a legend shared amongst the gnomes of an enormous giant hamster that floats through the cosmos. Known as “Wooly Rupert”, this creature is believed to be the largest and most intelligence hamster in existence. It has immense power, far beyond that of any normal hamster, and is even believed to have the ability to unleash arcane magic. The gnomes fear this beast above all other things, terrified of its existence and the day when it will descend upon them to exact its revenge. The legend of Wooly Rupert is told to the young gnomes to instill fear in their hearts, as a warning to be good and do their chores or else the most powerful of all hamsters will crush them beneath his enormous feet.

The Feywild (sometimes known as the Plane of Faerie) is a verdant, wild twin of the mortal realm. Towering forests sprawl for a thousand leagues. Perfect amber prairies roll between pristine mountain peaks soaring into the flawless clouds. Emerald, turquoise, and jade green seas crash along endless beaches. The skies are a perfect blue not seen in the mortal world—until storms come, coal dark thunderheads boiling with fierce winds and torrential rains. In this world, arcane power thrums through every tree and rock. All existence is magical.
The creatures native to the Feywild—the enigmatic eladrin, the vicious hags, the wild dryads, and the tyrannical fomorians—are all charged with the mystic energy of this plane. Some are blessed by it, and some are warped. Like the land around them, the fey who inhabit this plane run to extremes. Good fey are noble and just, protectors of the natural world and those mortals they choose to show favor to. Evil fey are dark instinct unleashed, all blood and claw and rage. The creatures of the Feywild can be kind, cruel, noble, monstrous, and savage—often all at the same time.
Some eladrin sages claim that the Feywild is the dream of the natural world itself. The Feywild is in many ways indistinguishable from the natural world. However, like a dream, the Feywild is a dangerous, vibrant reflection of the familiar. The geography of the Feywild parallels that of the mortal realm, if loosely. Various mountains, rivers, and seas on the natural world are found on the Feywild. However, the distances between landmarks in the Feywild—and the landmarks themselves—are often distorted.
Mortals come to this perilous realm to tap into the arcane powers that course like unseen rivers of magic through the wild landscape. Some wish to negotiate secret knowledge from the eladrin; some battle fey who inflict their capricious cruelties on innocents in the mortal world. Others seek to plunder magic artifacts still buried in the wreckage of crystal cities abandoned by the eladrin during the war with the drow. The dizzying forests, storm-kissed seas, and cloud-sheathed granite peaks of the Feywild hold countless mysteries for those with both the courage and cunning to survive.
Reaching the Feywild
The Feywild is unique in that it is the only plane commonly reached by accident. In the wild places of the world fey crossings—points where the barrier between the Feywild and the mortal world is thin -lie sleeping in hidden glades or brood under mistwreathed hills. More than a few mortals have strayed into fey crossings on the wrong day of the year or at the wrong moment of the day only to find themselves stranded in the world of the fey.
Over the centuries, the eladrin (and others) improved many naturally occurring fey crossings to create a number of reliable portals between the Feywild and the world. Such portals are marked by ancient standing stones, knee-high obelisks covered in ancient runes, groves of trees planted in a deliberate arrangement, or even circles of toadstools. Some fey crossings are as small as a single narrow archway between two menhirs, and others are sylvan glades the size of cities. Many of these sites have been abandoned. Their magic only slumbers deeply, waking when conditions are right or when ancient elven words of passage coax them to life.
Fey crossings can normally be activated one of two ways: a key phrase coded to that particular crossing point or the use of the Fey Passage ritual. As befits their connection to such a wild plane, some portals activate randomly or when certain specific conditions are met, such as when the right lunar phase occurs or the sun hits a certain angle through just the right trees. When a fey crossing activates through random or through rare but normal occurrences, creatures often pass through these open portals without even noticing the transition to the Feywild. A few fey crossings remain permanently open. These occur in the deepest forests of the world, places where the mortal world and the Feywild achieve the greatest harmonic convergence.
Fey crossings in the mortal world are surrounded in local legends. Old stories warn that encounters with fey are fraught with peril. People who wander into the Feywild return changed, and some never return at all. For alert adventurers, such tales are clues to a long-lost passage to the wondrous, savage world of the fey. A forest with a reputation for locals disappearing in it may indeed be home to savage beasts—or perhaps folks who walk between two twin trees atop a hill deep in the woods at moonrise leave one world for the next.
The second method of travel across to the Feywild is through a worldfall. Worldfall occurs when the ebb and flow of planar energy allows a huge tract of land from one plane to shift to the other. Eladrin cities often “ride” worldfalls, suddenly appearing in the mortal world in a flash of sunlight and scattered flowers. To travel to the Feywild, all a traveler need do is enter the gates of such an eladrin city while it rests in the mortal plane and then wait within until the city returns to the Feywild.
Each worldfall is different. An eladrin city may appear regular as clockwork or once a century. The city of Shinaelestra shifts into the world every midnight, replacing a glade deep in the Howling Forest, then shifts back to the Feywild just before dawn. The towers of Astrazalian remain on the hillsides of a fair green island all spring and summer, fading into the Feywild with the coming of autumn and winter.

Before the founding of Waterdeep, a wizard settled on the slopes of Mount Waterdeep with seven apprentices. None know the origins of Halaster Blackcloak, the Mad Wizard, but he's said to have devised many spells now widely known. Halaster summoned and bound creatures from other planes to build his tower.
Halaster's creatures - some of whom hunted humans by night - dug extensive storage tunnels beneath his abode. At length, their tunnels broke into the large, grand Underhalls, old dwarven delvings of the long-vanished Melairkyn clan. Halaster eradicated the drow infesting the halls and moved entirely into the subterranean ways, leaving behind his tower. His curious apprentices, abandoned on the surface, explored the underground lair but found only traps baited with powerful magic (and enigmatic messages hinting that "true power" awaited them below). One by one, as their courage and capabilities allowed, the seven descended in search of their master. They found a strange, dangerous labyrinth where Halaster stored his treasures, experiments, victuals and necessities, magic items, and servants - kept safe (he thought) from spying, theft, and attack.
As time passed and Waterdeep grew around the mountain's base, expeditions of armed adventurers into Halaster's stronghold grew numerous. He roamed planes to collect monsters and moved his operations deeper into the endless Underdark. Undermountain became known as a place of horrors, the lair of terrible monsters. Halaster himself grew old, mighty, and insane.
The warrior Durnan (NG male human Ftr18) and others who explored Undermountain spoke of its riches, hazards, and vast passages. Many who were desperate for wealth, bored, or escaping pursuit went down the shafts in Durnan's inn, the Yawning Portal. Some returned, now rich for life, and greed kept the adventurous coming. Some in Waterdeep whisper that the Lords still sentence defiant criminals to Undermountain, to die or find their own ways free.

Halaster, it is said, still roams the dozen levels and twice that many sublevels of Undermountain, watching from the walls. The Lords of Waterdeep turn a deaf ear to reports of entire temples below them (notably the Promenade of Eilistraee) and even an entire lawless trading community in the depths, Skullport. Sea caves are connected via great sling-hoists to the waters of Undermountain, allowing sea captains to smuggle cargoes to and from the drow and darker beings who dwell in wicked Skullport. The Lords forbid slavery in Waterdeep, but do not interfere when unsavory folk are smuggled out or down by this route.
