Always take a backup before formatting in case you do lose something. In case of non steam games there's usually some utilities like http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2010/05/17/gamesavemanager-can-backup-your-saved-games-settings-and-person/ that can backup saves and such. I cant vouch for any of those utilities though.

All your achievements are stores in the steam cloud. as for items, it depends on the game. For example, TF2 and L4D2 do keep stats and items in the cloud.

Does anyone know if you format your HD, whether or not you loose your acheivments and items for games?

Josh - it seems to only track how much time you play over a 2 week period, nothing on how good or bad you are :)

Does anyone know what the steam rating is? how calculated? usefulness?
