You have 2 years in the UK. If it's not in warranty, suck it up buttercup! Valve nor any other company is legally obliged to offer support. That is just how it is.
What do you want them to diagnose remotely? That it's not working? All the person on the other side of the screen can do is read a prompt off a computer, they are NOT an engineer.
That is just how it is. It's not a justification. It's not even in defence of Valve. It's just reality.
You either service it yourself, send it in to be serviced or buy a replacement. Sucks to be a adult and no, I dont like spending money anymore than anyone else. I like things to just "work".
And claiming you have to spend £1000 on a new controller? It's £260 for a pair of new ones. Just wait till they are in stock if you really need a new controller.
All of that said...
I had the same issue earlier this year (and I bought my Index back in the end of 2019 so kinda good going for it to only happen 5 ish years into ownership). I performed multiple resets on the controller to the point it did eventually stay on and it works just fine now aside from a little bit of stick drift.
And no, I wont be buying another Index as their are cheaper better options now and I'd probably go for the Frame anyway so when the controllers go, they go. the index will be for sim pit use only after that.
