The Steam app will only run as background process and will not open
i've tried all the usual processes. killed it in task manager and re open, nothing. Restart computer, nothing. Check for family settings in the browser, i don't have any family set up. Purge my computer of anything with the name steam and re download, still same thing. i'm at my wits end all i wanted to do was use a mod for halo master chief edition to play split screen through nvidia geforce now. someone help if you can.

Try deleting the appcache folder in your Steam directory, resetting the network stack with netsh winsock reset, and launching Steam in Safe Mode with Networking. If that doesn’t work, create a new Windows user profile and test Steam there.

When steam is running in the "background," does Windows taskbar show "Steam" running? If so then try this:
  1. Find the desktop shortcut for steam.exe or create one if none is present.
  2. Right-click the shortcut and select "Properties"
  3. Select the "Shortcut" tab and then add a single space and the text (without quotes) "-cef-disable-gpu" to the end of the text in the "Target" box. For the default Steam install, the text in the target box should read (with quotes):
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe" -cef-disable-gpu
  4. Click "Apply" and "OK."
  5. Completely exit Steam; end "Steam (32bit)" process with Windows Task Manager if necessary.
  6. Double-click the modified shortcut.
  7. If Steam is running normally, then be sure to go to Steam -> Settings -> Interface and then disable "GPU accelerated rendering in web views." Afterward return the shortcut to how it was before by deleting the "-cef-disable-gpu" parameter.

Didn't work still.
Ok, whatever the **** Steam did with their update completely screwed everything up for me as well. Same issues. I've done all the things - even the nuke option of deleting all my games and folder and reinstalling. I used to get the steam app to show up in the sys tray, but now the only thing is does is sit in the task manager and pretend to work (which it does not).
Steam has officially entered its “diva era” and refuses to run on my PC. I’ve done the adult troubleshooting routine, uninstall, reinstall, reboot, question my life choices. Nothing. Steam just sits there like, “Adorable effort. Denied.”

So I escalated.

I prayed.
I offered a blood sacrifice (fine, a paper cut, but still).
I reset my router’s chakras.
I whispered sweet nothings into my GPU.
I smudged the hard drive with sage like a tech exorcist.
I threatened the motherboard with a full Linux conversion.
I even held a séance to summon the spirit of Windows 7.

Steam remains unbothered.

And the best part? I checked online and apparently half the internet is having the same issue. New forum threads are popping up like Steam has launched a global “Let’s Not Work Today” event and forgot to tell us.

If anyone’s got a ritual stronger than what I’ve already tried, and ideally one that won’t involve law enforcement, I’m listening.

Any one found a fix
If you have a controller connected kindly try to unplug it as it seems to work for most people.

The new update may have messed with something when a controller is connected.

Since I also experienced multiple issues yesterday and I did uninstalled my steam and did the same troubleshooting everyone does to no avail.

Thank you this helped and now my steam is working perfectly fine

The recent update for steam's architect from 32 to 64 bit pc's somehow borked many people's controllers. You may need to contact the developer of the controller, explain the situation to them in a email. Then see if they will make a new firmware update, or wait until steam fixes the issue in the next patch. Most likely your only hope is the developer of the controller as i doubt steam will take the time to fix all the issues on everyone's different controllers.

Most people are finding that even when you plug the controller back in after steam has booted, that the controller either doesn't work, or crashes steam, or it's just not recognised correctly.

Which means effectively as of the last update, most people can't use controllers anymore with steam games. That combined with CEG (custom execution generation) games being bricked, and steam tools being broken - it's safe to say that the switch to a 64bit client has not gone well lol XD

Thank god they decided to release this update at a time when hardly anyone is using steam right... :)
