Steam not detecting game updates
I'm having an odd issue where Steam isn't registering that a game has pushed an update. I have to validate my game files before Steam realizes there's an update, and then i'll be allowed to update. It happened commonly in Destiny 2, and now it appears to be happening with Warhammer 40k: Darktide.

It's also an easy simple thing to get out of the way. Good troubleshooting strategy is do the easy/dumb stuff first. Because if you do it last, you won't feel smart.

Have you restarted your PC?

Someone will ask....

Restarting the PC often solves this sort of issue. Sometimes restarting steam is enough.

PC has been restarted several times. Issue still persists

Is this on a external hard drive or internal one? External ones do not really work well with steam and are technically not recommended by steam support. It can cause problems like what your describing with updates.

This is internal on a nVME m.2 drive

Test your hard drive to see if it is corrupted or failing just to rule it out as causing the issue. This could be a possible sign your hard drive is failing too.

I don't believe it to be failing, however i'm not super versed in checking nVME health. I ran "chkdsk z: /f" in CMD and it doesn't look like anything out of the ordinary is going on.

Go to Steam -> Settings -> Downloads and look under "Updates to installed games." Make sure "Let Steam decide when to update" is selected.

In your Steam Library, right-click Destiny 2 and select "Properties." Click on "Updates." Under "Automatic Updates," which of the following option is set?
  1. Wait until I launch the game
  2. Let Steam decide when to update
  3. Immediately download updates

Immediately download updates. I used to use let steam decide, but set it to immediately when I started encountering this bug

Hey I know this is an old post. But did you ever find a solution? I've been recently having the same issue and nothing seems to be fixing it.

I've not had the issue in a while, although i've not really given it the opportunity to occur. The game I primarily had issues with was Destiny 2 which I took a long break from. I preemptively verified files beforehand, so no idea whether Steam detected the update or not.

I never found a solid fix for it, no.
Solutions is contact steam support about it. ( and game devs.)

Funny how people think we as users can edit or change what they push through as a update or not, infact should we actual have a choise at all. ( what if this was a serius issue like ingame bug that will lead to a game bugout. ) and it could have been avoided if patched.

Not all bug is about cosmetic detal or speelling fix.

ps.
This is just seen from other side ,sense when should we have right to prevent this as update or in your case it dont do it, according to you. ( i have never seen this myself. )

I need togo back to DOS witha game that was try to patch to a hardcode locations thats was incorrect. ( and thats was a dead give away with why )

if you have edit any steam files, then you could have same issue with content not work as it should, we have seen steam suer here edit VDF files. before with drive letter and where things is. ( becuase they do not understand pc computer administrator in the OS with assigned letters, but i bet this is not the case with OP and you.'

Try steam settings storage manager and repair steam library strucktor,

ohh we have also seen other user have install a game 2 times, they use external drives thats online and sometimes not then technicla you could have install games 2 diffrent places, even that is so fare fectout in crazy ideas with why.game think its updated and not.

gl with it, i stick to my knowledge, if i dont do that then i have no valid how that can happend
i did not say you could not ahave found a new issue, untill you do i have to stick to what i know.

feel free to test check OS ( google how to do if needed )

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth
SFC /Scannow
chkdsk c:
chkdsk d:
chkdsk e:
chkdsk f:
chkdsk g:
chkdsk h:

ps
Ttry see it hope MS self test can catch whatever this is, if not glw with it.
how will you check windows event log then this is not a crash issue according to you.
so you can see the problem here with no error msg or other info what is wrong with it.

Feel free to wipe OS and all games and start over if you feel no one on this planet can help you, proof this is game devs and staem with reproduce the error.

That how we did it then no one else could help us backthen we was new to PC and whatever windows in the past we had.

this is why in the past many error vanish and erroe was in the pc OS and as other user here said corrupt data like virus thats change data. ( not see in so many years ) data get corrupted, or OC scramble the data.

You need helpers ideas that can tell you other things, that could cause data corruptions.

Most of them ideas is from the past.
