Is there a way to "active train" a merc's health stat in this particular game? I could use some health boosts.

hey guys. i decided to play after awhile and already forgot, how to deal with these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. no matter what sector, always when there is 1-2 dudes left , then these always park somewhere. No problem , it makes perfect sense to me. Only issue are buildings. I decided to play ironman mode so savescumming is not the option here. So, I'm in the Alma Prison, all my characters are about shot up. There's a final room, where this dude with like 50 AP has a high-powered machine gun who will instantly kill anyone who comes through either of the doors. Clearly this is a situation to use a Grenade - Regular, Mini, or Gas. So, of course, I throw a Grenade in - nothing happens . I've tried all types and distances - it's basically a rock.
