I've done so many playthroughs on the original and I was really enjoying the remaster. Problem is there is a memory leak. After 30ish hours my save slows down to a crawl. Loading between cells takes over two minutes and combat is unbearable. I'd really like to recommend this game, but I can't.

There’s a weird duality to Oblivion Remastered.
On one hand, it’s the same dreamlike Cyrodiil that you remember from 2006.
On the other, it’s the same dreamlike Cyrodiil that you remember from 2006.

The remaster has a lot of performance problems; the devs have seemingly abandoned the game, at least for now. A common fix would be to disable Nanite, but in my eyes, that is simply not a solution. There is a persistent memory leak, the RTX implementation is completely broken, bugs remain from the original 2006 version, and a lot of mods over the years to fix these things do not work in this remaster. That's kind of the whole problem here; the community is very limited in what they can do to band-aid the game.
If you are fine capping the game to 30 fps or lowering some graphical settings and capping it to 60, I think you can have an ok time.


At its core this remaster is the 2006 version of Gamebryo, with an Unreal Engine 5 graphical layer on top. The actual core engine mechanics are almost completely untouched from the original 2006 version. To my eye this is fine (if it was going to be patched correctly over the years.)


Setting performance aside for a second, if we operate under the assumption that this does not bother you, we are left with, frankly, a really good time! Although you can feel this ancient Gamebryo engine buckling under the weight of itself in pretty much everything you do, it's still a fun time and a good trip down memory lane.


If you are after a true Oblivion experience, this remaster is unfortunately going to fall short. If you can handle the original graphics, I would highly recommend playing the original version.
It runs better, it has 20 years of mod support, and it will bring you back to a time period where Bethesda really cared about their customers.
