Renamed all my soldiers after my friends. They are all dead now.
The game looked me dead in the eyes, let me miss a 94% shot and then had a Sectoid one tap my best guy on the very next turn. Incredible stuff. XCOM is genuinely one of the best strategy games ever made: deep, tense and endlessly replayable. It respects your time just enough to make you waste all of it. Every mission feels like a heist plan that goes perfectly until it absolutely doesn't and somehow that just makes you want to go again. If you enjoy making careful tactical decisions only to watch them collapse in real time, this is peak gaming. Just don't get attached to your squad. Trust me on that one.

Recommended - but it's no X-Com and I reluctantly recommend. It is easier, more simplistic, and more frustrating than the original. The visuals are better and it has some cut scenes, but it is in my opinion inferior to X-Com. 1) Limited slots; you have only 4 slots to put items in, always making for a difficult choice what to take. You cannot have a medikit and a grenade at the same time, which is just silly. Want that weave vest to protect you? Well drop your grenade, soldier, because you can't have both! In fact, you can only have ONE grenade in that slot, and no other grenades (average WW2 soldier carried 2-6 grenades). 2) Cover is wonky since even at full cover aliens always seem to hit my units. 3) Terrorist actions always cause increased dissatisfaction in 2 of 3 countries you're presented with; there's ALWAYS a downside to every choice. I could nitpick, but it's an okay game. If you never played X-Com before (or you LOVE console games, which is what this seems like) then you will probably enjoy it better than I did. I've had the game for years and still never finished it, if that's any indication of its appeal. Mods may help remove some irritations.
