I AM 76 YEARS OLD AND HAVE LONG SINCE GIVEN UP SHOOTEM UPS. THIS GAME REQUIRES THOUGHTFUL PLANNING TO BUILD A CIVILIZATION THAT CAN BE BUILT OVER WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE IT BECAUSE NOW YOU BUILD A BETTER CIVILIZATION. YOU AREN'T PLAYING THOUGHLESSLY WITH A CHILDS TOY CARS OR DINOSAURS JUST TO ALWAYS WIN. IT TAKES CAREFUL THOUGHT AND PLANNING TO MAKE IT WORK AND YOU DON'T NEED TO BUY A NEW GAME EVERY FEW WEEKS.

No doubt about it: if you're hoping to combine the retro goodness of older Civilization instalments with a better gameplay loop found in newer games... Civilization V is the one for you.
It's a great turn-based hex strategy game; and the first of the genre that I played. I was always an Age of Empires fanboy, but I was convinced to play Civilization V by a friend, who promised to teach me how to play. These are the best ways to learn and fall in love with games, and 400+ hours later, I've 100%'d it and firmly moved on to Civilization VI... even if I still dip into this one from time to time.
