I did like the game a lot overall, but it’s visual design and some of the feedback it gives to the player is pretty problematic.

I looked for, and found, a mod to turn off the visual effects, because we had a lot of trouble trying to see the enemies. After a bit more play time we figured out that there were a few issues that caused the visual problems, but we left the visual effects turned off. I don’t know that it is necessary, but it felt better. There are so many lighting effects and we honestly could not even make out the enemies in the middle of all the lights and colours. We were often using the minimap to orient the character at enemies, because it was quite hard to just actually scan the view infront of you to look for enemies. It was much quicker to look at the minimap to check if there were even enemies in front of you. After we turned the visual effect off we could play as you would normally expect, which is using your eyes to look in front of you for enemies.

Firstly, on about the second level you encounter very small enemies. I don’t think this was a thing in Borderlands before. They are melee as well. Many times I was suddenly dying and I had no idea what was going on. If you look basically straight down you can see them, but not when looking ahead at normal height.

Some of the other enemies in an early area are nearly the exact same colour as the environment.

The explosive barrels and chests physically change appearance in each level. Early on we got exploded by things we didn’t know were explosive barrels. I think you get kind of used to it, but it does take more effort to take the environment in. Sometimes I would see something weird, go closer to look at it and notice the button prompt to open. I hadn’t even realised I was looking at a chest.

Also, elemental effects are altered by water. They become bigger and do more damage. This might sound like a good concept, but there are random puddles of water everywhere. Sometimes you would take much more damage than you would usually. It took a while to notice why we sometimes rapidly lost health. It’s because were were standing in water. Sometimes it was explosive barrels we didn’t recognise blew up on water we didn’t notice we were standing in. If I suddenly started dying rapidly I assumed I was in water.

I don’t know if the indicator you are taking elemental damage is very clear. I think I was confused sometimes because I knew I must be hit by something elemental, because the fight was over and I was still getting hurt, but the indicator wasn’t clear or something. I would have been very confused if I didn’t know that’s how the Borderlands game work. Previous games were much more obvious you were on fire or whatever.

The early game is a bit difficult because of this. I played with someone else and we played the previous Borderlands game and we kept being wrong footed because of the things I mentioned, like dying quickly in water and not realising we were on fire.

The weapons all work quite differently to previously, in that you seem to empty your clip faster and spend much more time reloading than before. Also the spell(grenade) variety is very big and confusing because it seems like there are no categories you can use to mentally sort them. Categories exist, but it wasn’t clear without looking them up.

The classes are somewhat interesting. Each class has a special Class feat, but these are pretty minor overall. For example, two of the class feats are have pet. Another is has higher critical hit chance. It feels cool to dual class, but the classes aren’t super interesting from a gameplay perspective in the first place. I personally place the class skills quality as below Pre-Sequel(Best), and BL3(2nd Best), but above Borderlands 2(Worst). This ranking is based on how transformative the class skills are to the basic gameplay. Pre Sequel skills can quite substantially impact gameplay, whereas BL2 skills have basically no change on the basic gameplay and only make minor stat changes. The skills in Tiny Tina do change how you play, and are relatively unique, but they are also relatively small in number compared to BL3. So the class skills are still quite a lot better than BL2, but aren’t as good as BL3.

The weapons are quite unique. It does feel distinct in that you don’t feel like you are using the same guns as from BL3.

I do like the game, but it can be some work to understand, even coming from the previous games. Tiny Tina can be quite confusing and having experience from previous games might help, but we were still confused by things like the environment quite a lot more than previously.

wanted to enjoy this game and the only reason i bought it was to play it on my samsung 3D monitor because it was recently supported. everything looks great except you can’t see your guns in 3d? the only thing you can see is the reticle and that’s it, no gun, no melee animations ? i hope a fix is coming soon from the devs! pleaseeeee

While the game starts off being promising, it gets very boring very quick.

* Fighting same enemies over and over again.
* The constant wave based content is absolute boring and repetitive
* Mostly fetch quests

I have not finished it yet but I quit right now as its just the same things over and over again.
