A lot of people will give you false tips.
Study the TF2 website found on the store page. Additionally at the top of that page is a link to the "Wiki" site where pretty much everything is documented.
Study the 9 classes, their main features and weapons, then study game modes.
Once you have the slightest grasp just hop in. The game will initially let you know if you're doing it right, and then it will shut up and get out of your way.
Play a bit, figure out what you like or what you want to see and then try to find it on the wiki.
